Driveshaft weight fouling block

Featured Replies

As the title says...

I'm not sure what to think of this. as i know others have gone lower and not had this problem. But my block (AFH) in the MK3 is sat on the driveshaft weight

What are some possible solutions here (besides winding the coilovers back up)

Would i get away with moving the weight? it would be less than 1cm. or does it have to be perfect?

If i did move it, what/how bad would the problems be?

What if i removed the weight all together?

I thought to possibly raise the engine a small amount, but then my driveshafts will be on the chassis legs.

Its literally just catching the weight about 2mm before it slopes down.

Any helps, muchos appreciated.

CEG BLUD!

Welcome to my world, you've just touched the ice berg  LIke the titanic, once it starts it will not stop, and the full extent of that iceberg will not be realised until your balls deep in water/shit and may aswell carry on!

I have no real reason for that weight being there other than MY THINKING no research atall and my thinking is poop but its something to do with that shaft being lighter/thinner so that adds weight to stop the wheels spinning as un evenly.... More than likely twoddle as i have no idea what in talking about  I do know on clubG40 theres uprated thicker driveshafts for sale with no mention of the weights, so thicker shafts dont use them. SO buy one of them.... or say where its catching and maybe trim that down... You'll work it out tobes :D Pics of said lows when you can also mate :-)

The driveshaft weight on my mates corrado came loose and was rattling around. Apparently most people just cut them off when that happens. He hasn't noticed any difference without it anyway.

Could it be a balancer?

Lost my weigh years ago never noticed any difference.

Its only there to counteract and reduce the stress that the amazing levels of torque the polo generates from twisting the longer drive shaft.

yer - VW put it there at a cost for no reason what so ever - just take it off

Wasn't this removed at yours for some reason? Was it even put back in the correct place? This has never been an issue on any of my polo's and I'd assume that they would of put the weight in the same place on all of them if its placement was of any importance?

Yeah, we had it off at Kiz's to swap the boot on the opposite end. To save taking both CV's off.

Possibly put it back on wrong, who knows

I'm just going to budge it up about 7mm (all i need for plenty of clearance) and see what happens, if anything.

That's what i'd do, move it up, VW must have put it there for some theoretical reason.

Well earlier driveshafts didn't have them so there is no problem to running without they more than likely added them later on to help stop problems and the adding weight to help stop that wheel spinning up is what I would go for too

And as said just buy one of the uprated shafts from clubg40 that will sort it ;)

I think I'll stick to just moving it a bit rather than blowing near £200 on a driveshaft

It's there for a reason.

Maybe something to do with a vibration, masses are often bolted to cars to alter the frequency of vibrations to make them less noticeable to the driver and such.

The specific measurement is in Haynes. As iv told you, measure it and check it.

Probably be ok without it but IMO id keep it.

Pictures?

I already said Yarris, without taking the CV joints off, how could i measure? Surely its not possible? unless you did guess work, in which case it being a few mm out would make no difference anyway

Hey I said the measurements there not that it's possible to check haha

i took it off yes- but i put it back on in the same place as the shaft had rust on it to tell me where it went. and i do remember not doing it up as you were in a hurry to get off. id check it, you will be able to guess within 3/4mm of where the shaft ends. it may be that i put it on the wrong way round and the chamfered but is pointing the wrong way- but as i said when you left- it needs to be checked.

or instead of spunking £200 get a diesel driveshaft like i did, but you will need to angle grind the corner of the block for clearance (the extra casting piece for a rear engine mount- vw used the same mould for quite a few blocks)

Diesel shaft, same size drive flanges and all that kiz.... might gerra price on one of them tonight when i go collect my engine bits :-) If you can still buy them new?

it was an EU part not here in the uk mate so i doubt it. only came on the last of the mk3s aswell not all diesels. be expensive new if you even could

mebi wrong way round?

not had 30 peolpe in the last week ask the same question when theyve lowered their car so cant be that common? haha

I guessed at 1w item, no problem. I'll look into a thicker one when i actually need one, not any time soon! got enough with wiring issues at the minute :-(

It is on the right way Kiz, Good job i had this problem, or it'd have came loose

I've moved it now so its entirely out the way.

I'll update here when i start driving it with weather or not i notice any problems.

I could take the block back, as you say the part thats fouling has no use on one of these.

I've removed mine because of clearance with the squarer ally sump - if i move the weight enough away to miss the sump then it can foul the chassis leg. It's only a centrifugal balancer and there's been no adverse effect.
