What consists as off topic, obviously questioning Toby's sexuality is but some threads although they drift slightly off topic in the strictest sense of the word can have some good info in them due to that. Like max was looking at options for his ignition setup and this led to a small discussion about megajolt, which is obviously car related and would be helpful to some one looking at his thread considering doing something similar. Likewise the discussion about his proposed steering arms on his coilovers

Is this sort of thing enough off topic to get be classed as bad off topic? Or is it ok to drift away from the subject at hand as long as its still in keeping with the bigger picture if that makes sense?

Obviously this wouldn't even come into it with blogs, but while we still have the current build thread section is there any chance this could be cleared up? I just don't want my build thread deleting because some one has asked a question about some thing which has started a little discussion about the subject

I think it depends on how focused the post is regarding a topic that clearly has a synergy with the build.

As someone who can learn a lot from some of the build threads and finds a lot interesting about what is being done, how to do it and problems and considerations around the work, I spend a fair bit of time reading through them.

However, prior to seeing this thread, today I bailed on one of the threads by one of the guys commenting here, as i could no longer be arsed to wade through the pages and pages of banter to get to the good stuff. Ill probably go back some time but it diminishes the build thread by filling it with crap.

A discussion around some of the choices and options is still interesting to those following the thread and can also give a sense of the thought processes which have led a car to the point it is at for those reading in arrears, and its part of the build.

You expect a few now contributory posts as people want feedback as a build can be a lonely place without sharing the progress.

I dont think its that hard to decide if a discussion should be taken to another area or not.

Common sense is telling me that a car thread topic is about the car, and all conversation relating directly or indirectly to it. When the subject is completely lost and has become in such a way that it isn't leading back to the topic, there's your difference and what can be regarded as abuse of the space allocated.

I might be wrong of course, but that's what i recon.

Yeah that's what I hope it is mikey, just want clarification on that so I don't risk getting mine or someone else's thread deleted by assuming that's the case but it turns out its not

Yup for sure, if it's related, it makes sense. If it's a big technical debate (or question) probably best for OP to start a new topic in the relevant section so everyone on the forum can benefit from responses, and all technical info isn't intertwined into build threads (which not everyone who could offer advice might read). So win win.

I'm going to clean up (and re-open) ceretain builds threads, will PM those involved.

Obviously, don't give unlock privileges or things like that, but if you had the options to lock the topic (i.e. if you're on holiday for a while and don't want a thread full of crap on your return, then ask a mod to unlock it on your return) and to delete other peoples posts within your build thread (and not forum wide, obviously), that might work, if people used it correctly.

That's actually something we discussed implementing in the new forum, though currently the OP can always use the report post button to flag something for moderation too.

This is kind of a touchy subject, i posted earlier in here and it wasn't calling anyone a bellend or was it rude nor off topic and it got deleted but no biggy anyways.

I think it should be taken into consideration to atleast speak to people like humans there is really no need for the formal warnings etc, a simple post saying stay on topic and tone down the bad language is good enough, lack of communication is a big killer to any form of relationships may that be club members or admins.

People's disagreement towards the admin shouldn't be deleted either, we are all adult here, no need to let the bad days of our personal life upset the flow here.

You compared the mods to Hitler, so that's probably why it was deleted...

Also, those in question had already been warned less than 48hrs before this situation arose, though it was done via PM - so apologies that the moderators didn't inform you of this happening. If you'd been around here for a while, you'd also be aware that this isn't the first time either!

I've stopped reading half of the above named build threads, because literally its 5 pages of banter in between any actual updates. Now I don't mind banter, makes the world go round, but literally when its pure aimless shite, like telling toby hes a homo (we all know this) or eric is a chicken fucker ( we all know this ) or Nick being dennis pennis' son (we all know this) it gets pretty tiring, pretty quickly.

the worst thing about it all, is when someone gets told off, they go all commando and post ten million threads about it crying like a bitch. just man up and take it, and realise that with freedom comes responsibility

no responsibility, no freedom.

the forum owes you nothing, neither do the admin.

just think for a second before you post

5 years ago, there were mainly serious threads, two or three of the funniest posts imaginable and then it went sensible again. thats when the off-topic posts were actually about quality, not quantity!

We know we can't and shouldn't chat shite, toby was upset that the thread specifically for chatting bollocks, and also indirectly talking about builds got deleted, and then his build thread even though he thought no one had broken the rules.

I know it might not seem it, but i'm sure everyone knows the rules, even me and maybe eric, it sometimes just slips the mind or you can't help it,

I personally just think a thread for banter/build thread chat would work, it did work.

Toby's thread has been cleaned and re-opened, it's been made fairly clear throughout the last few months by forum users, members, mods and admin that build threads full of banter and chatroom replies are boring to read, hence the big cleanup.

Max you thread has been cleaned too and looks and reads much better for it, I'll do the others when I get a chance.

I had a couple of peoples ask why certain things were done as they are. I'd like to think I listenned to their side, gave them the best answer I could, my opinion on whether I think it's a good idea or not and what would probably/has happened were it done another way. They went away not neccessarily agreeing with me, but at least seeing where I was coming from. On the other hand a fair few people barely came out of their tent to talk to anyone.

I've been on here quite a bit today (waiting for a bloody courier!) and have noticed the huge amount of agro being thrown around towards mods, from mods, normal users and club members. Most of the comments aren't even needed, just a prod with a stick or another little moan (mostly about the forum 'being on its arse' and such like). The reason its on it's arse is because of just this attitude, and it tends to follow a mods intervention in a thread (but not always, bitching between the usual suspects too).

Now i know my build thread came under a lot of fire a few weeks back, and I felt, like others that i was a target, be that or not. But since that got cleared up, because i was civil and so were others, I feel that its all been forgotten and everyone is being their useful self again. However, there are still some repeat offenders who keep making these snidey comments or acting like whiney victims whilst others are trying to be more useful.

Everyone knows that reading something on the internet can be taken the wrong way, especially with the lack of literacy some users seem to exhibit, and what can be seen as a cocky comment is actually just statement of a fact. Also people behaving like victims when someone disagrees only helps to fuel the agro fire that really isn't needed on here. I know for a fact that some users have problems with one another on here, but instead of having a good argument, or pm'ing your beef, you still insist on making 'under the breath' comments.

So can everyone just learn to get a long, having a differing opinion isn't a bad thing and if someone says something you don't like then save it for the show feild where you can have an actual debate. This goes too the protagonists too, if you're writing something meant to antagonise, don't. If your sticking your oar into someone elses arguments, don't. And think about how you word things, will it be taken the wrong way. I've seen the absence of quite a few members recently who used to be frequent visitors and although they may have other cars/commitments these days, I can only assume at least some are no longer using the forum because its become more like a primary school play ground.

The forum will only continue to go down hill unless some people moderate their attitudes. I do not want this place becoming similar to other forums where bitching is the norm. And I can gaurantee others feel the same

it takes just as much effort to put an off topic reply in a build thread, as it does to start a new thread with a disscussion about it, assuming that the post has quality information and is not abusing anybody.

look down at the bottom of the page there are 3 tabs fast reply. add reply, NEW TOPIC!! just click it and then it's its own thread about its own subject and will not be considered off topic , as it may have been if posted in the thread you were viewing.
