Polo fault codes and EGR

Featured Replies

Hi trying to cure Kangarooing Polo 05reg 12 valve 1.2cc swapped coil packs replaced plugs, fuel filter, cleaned EGR valve with Carb cleaner, also cleaned throttle body in situ, slight improvement for 30 miles or so, but now wont accelerate, plugs sooting up, jet black and sooty but not wet, gave in and bought fault code reader off EBAY, 3 codes read 17811 16490 and 16891 anyone help with the first 2 codes that are not listed in my code reader book I'm thinking the fault lies in the EGR valve but according to Haynes manual if the EGR is replaced with a new one it has to be programmed at a VW dealers, anyone know any different.

thanks

Thanks for your input regarding fault codes.

Polo eventually became totally undriveable so I had to tow it to a local non VW garage as VW couldn't even look for two weeks and I ran out of time, anyway local garage read faults code on their machine which only pulled up one code rather than the three that my Ebay reader found, which resulted in the Maf sensor being replaced to no avail,as car still wouldn't start, garage finished up replacing Catalytic converter which was apparently virtually blocked and exhaust system,Car now back with new Cat and Exhaust seems to be running Ok though exhaust seems to have a more sporty rasp to it, cant really understand why a cat should need replacing at 36,000 though or maybe that's what happens when a car is continually used for cold start 3/4 mile journeys.
