All modified cars soon to be illegal (if we don't fight)

Featured Replies

I doubt any of the above. As long as it would meet the type approval at the time, you should be a-ok.

for example

Type approval- "daytime running light must be available on all new cars from 2012"

ACE translation- "daytime running lights must be fitted to all vehicles, it is the end of the world as we know it, everyone will driving illegal cars."

the government can't make swathes of cars illegal overnight.

YES. Brilliant, that's what I was trying to say above in about a thousand words.

London low emission zone :p

doesn't effect cars only large vans and lorries, but no doubt it will eventually start to effect cars and will expand and eventually cover the entire country, probably placing usage restrictions on older vehicles if not outlawing them completely.

That would be very difficult, too. Farm machinery, for one. Easy to stop smoky old commercials going into London, or perhaps town centres altogether, but I can't see it covering the whole country. They're just trying to stop heavily polluting vehicles going into areas of dense traffic, where they'll cause smog through idling. Do vans really last long enough for this to become problematic? Most get worked into the ground and scrapped when they cease to be useful workhorses.

Germany already has this for cars in certain cities though. If your car doesn't have a catalytic converter or a soot trap you can forget taking it into a town centre. But you can retrofit a catalyst and be eligible. Then you have to buy a coloured windscreen sticker to show how clean it is, valid for the life of the vehicle, and all petrol cars get a green sticker if they've got a catalyst. Again, it's really only for lorries.

Hence the :p , however at the time it was introduced i was working as Courier for TNT driving a new DAF 55 , id only had it a few months when they suddenly realised half the Enfield and Luton fleet were not LEZ compliant and we would have to swap with them . If they are prepared to do that to MultiNational companies what hope do we have.

The modified car industry brings in about 4 billion per year into the UK, why would they then try to filter out the older cars? To boost the purchasing of newer cars? To give profits to different countries as every big(ish) british car company was sold?

The government are idiots! Laughable!

ITS BUUUULSHIIIIT!

End of the day all teh government think about is ££££££££££££££ right?

why would they try and drive away something that brings them so much profit?

speeding fines?

fixed penalty fines for tyre poke etc?

all the tax they make from companys selling products?

they wont get rid of an easy money maker

The specialist car industry in the UK, including motorsport, employs more people than the mainstream carmakers. A majority of the world's racing cars, including the ones for the "all-American" Indy Car series, are developed and built in the UK. It's unlikely that they'd wipe it out just like that.

But the thing with the UK is, while we don't really have any domestic carmakers any more we do at least build vast quantities of cars here. Nissan, Honda, Toyota and Vauxhall aren't British, but they all make cars here. Ford makes engines in Bridgend. Jaguar and Land Rover make all of their cars here too, and in the last case most of those get sold abroad. There is still a thriving car industry in the UK.

You could argue that it's not really ours if the money goes abroad, but most of the above manufacturers also source components as locally as possible and employ thousands of workers to do the job. So it is beneficial to the UK economy.

Tobacco companies aside, the government isn't out to cripple an industry.

But jobs wont be bringing in much revenue into the country in comparison to the modified car industry, could you imagine the uproar all around the country if they brought it in?

As I said before, with it bringing in so much money to this country they should respect it not do the complete opposite. Maybe if they increase the standard of materials used to make roads, which could boost the industry, and prevent further costs on repairing them...

It's true, you can't have brains and common sense.

my mum lives in crete and i own a chalet in the french alps so i could have the best of both worlds ;) sun sea sand in summer and snow and skiing all winter! BOOOOOOOM!

And you choose to live in Huddersfield :?

I'm fairly sure that if you added up all the UK revenue from car shows and car tuning businesses it'd be a drop in the ocean compared to the UK automotive industry. JLR turned in pre-tax profits of £1.5 billion last tax year and employ over 20,000 people - and then there's a plethora of Tier 1 & Tier 2 suppliers that survive off the back of the JLR manufacturing. The modified car industry would have to be selling an awful lot of sets of coilovers, bodykits, remaps, exhausts, induction kits etc. to rival those numbers. A few years ago the DTI published a report saying that the UK passenger vehicle industry contributed circa £9.8 billion to the UK economy, based on the finances of the few major OEMs. Add all the peripheral businesses on and it's hugely significant.

I think it's all fairly irrelevant anyway - there's not really a clear-cut line between the modified car/tuning industry and the automotive industry in its widest sense, a lot of the tuning specialists still make plenty of money from working on, or selling parts for, standard vehicles.

If this new legislation is applied sensibly I don't think we'll see many (any?!) changes to our MOT system. I can't see them changing overnight to a system that effectively regulates against anything that's not factory standard for the reasons Alex has stated. And even if they do, there's always the IVA which isn't exactly stringent. The only people that it might annoy are those that drive around in unmaintained or badly modified death traps - but then they probably already get hooky MOTs anyway, so it won't matter.

I think you've misunderstood my post.

I said the modified car industry employs a bigger workforce than the mass market car manufacturers, and that it's a huge domestic industry which they wouldn't want to wipe out. But my point was not to write off the positive economic effect of mass-market vehicles being built in the UK.

Anyway, add up all of the money you've spent modifying your car and work out how much of that went to UK companies. For example, Rotiform and Fifteen52 are American, BBS and Schmidt are German, Rota is Phillipino - just as a few at the top of the popularity chain right now. Most of the big suspension manufacturers for German cars (Eibach, FK, KW, etc) are based on in Continental Europe. Almost all ICE is built in the Far East. So where's a lot of the revenue from the modified car industry going? Abroad.

Fine, so you'll pay for UK labour to fit parts and get work done, but you'll usually be using consumables brought in from abroad when you do.

So what's the main benefit of our specialist car industry? Jobs.

and tax

don't matter where in the world its been brought in from, if your buying in this country the powers that be make sure they take a cut off the top of it :disgust:

^as it should, that money pays for your social welfare. How much of the tax is wasted is another story

The car industry in Britain is of course massive, utterly important, and not something the government will let go of. But even if they refuse to be blackmailed, they won't have to.

Disagreeing to such legislation that would destroy moderately modified cars would not mean the manufacturers just dump Britain. Some are panicking, some scaremongering, but fact is that these manufacturers will continue to invest in Britain regardless.

So killing off one industry to save another, nah, doesn't quite cut it.

Quick everyone, grab your tinfoil hats!

What a load of shit

This sounds something like it. I'd jump up and down for that. Now off to Ace's link to fill in my details.

On an aside, just spotted this on another car forum, which someone has linked. 8 replies to it so far, and the majority are:

'I'll never happen'

'They can't do that'

'Eu crap is f'ing rubbish'.

Looks like there's a lot of work to do here....

Sadly I am getting the same sort of thing where I have posted the details.....

"It cant possibly happen, it will destroy businesses and **** up the economy even more! also think of the amount of modified cars on the road"

"Not a chance this will happen it will ruin so many companies and car modifying brings in tons of revenue for the government in tax.! They will lose out as much as us.!"

"Heard it all before, not sure what the scaremongering is about but it usually gets the reactions going"

even a moderator on a forum said - "Quick everyone, grab your tinfoil hats! What a load of ****"

:(

Ooh, I got quoted too!

That guy's got it bad..

Where was that posted?

This was in the news paper today, looks like they pushing it this time. Highly dought it will happen but still

Which newspaper?

It's been in Auto Express, and I notice it's been in the Daily Fail (which I don't really count as a newspaper, it's just bigoted lies sprayed onto some sheets of chip wrapper) with a load of Euro-hate.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-21...o=feeds-newsxml

In typical style, it starts with "Meddling Brussels bureaucrats" and they've quoted someone from UKIP too. CHANGE THE FUCKING RECORD YOU UNBALANCED RAG.

I'm still not worried.

Ye it was the sun I seen it in, not exactly the most reliable source of info but still.

It did say that historic car owners are kicking up a fuss, dont imagine it will happen but still there are a lot of people out there that belive all modified car owners are "chavs" and would love to see this pass

Edited by Richman711

But it may also make people realise that not all modified car owners are 'chavs'

Think about it, Mr middle England scoffing at the young whipersnappers being banned from modding cars only to realise that this could also affect the equally middle England bloke next door with his show standard MG midget
