Actually decided to do something..

Got this..

1B2FA8C0-8695-4A85-974D-BDA10B11D623-241

Left coilpack and TPS at my friends but yeah.

Going to make a new loom, probably just buy new connectors and pins: apart from the EDIS module - connector is 40£!

Awaiting a crank pulley from Mr runforrestrun then I'll order a trigger wheel and make up a bracket for the crank sensor side of things.

Then gonna machine a dizzy blank and also mount the coilpack off this, adapt my HT leads to suit the ford coil pack connections

Bit of an update again:

Found some different front springs to try, longer free length and slightly stiffer, extra length isnt an issue as I have plenty of adjustment left to take it up.

0E11E644-0916-4106-BEEA-A551222376F3-865

Also got some more MJ bits together,

OEM Ford later style 4 cyl coil pack & a CBR 600 TPS

I have used the CBR TPS with a megajolt setup before and worked a treat, so no issues there.

Will need to change the ends on my HT leads to suit the coilpack, but thats not an issue.

D8B82A1D-893C-4CEE-98F2-8F07CF7311C7-865

Need to order up some new connectors and such.

Going to be a bit of a faff trying to sort this crank sensor, may well need to be mounted on the back of the block, but need to check clearance to driveshafts.

Need to measure the offset difference of the earlier 'V belt' type pulley to determine where to mount the trigger wheel.

Also got her back to life and took her for a drive yesterday, and decided to give her a wash. Paint is really porous it seems and it seems to stain easily which is rather annoying, need to try and find a really oily wax/polish/sealant.

1846077E-470A-4590-A672-419EBB4EAADC-865

Will be playing with ride heights and corner weights again once I have swapped springs and such.

Other than that, I need to make up the MJ loom at some point, but this can wait.

Priorities for the MJ are mainly sorting the trigger wheel setup, and machining a blank for the dizzy, which will also have tapped blind holes in it to mount a bracket to mount the coil pack.

Will be fitting black carpet when the seats are swapped, the rear interior will be stripped, but I will still be retaining a dash/heater/openable windows etc.

May also fit perspex/lexan side windows to shed a bit of weight too.

Be interesting to see how the MJ behaves on the AEE, I still want to build a 1.6 16v, not sure on a spec, and the AEE may become boost ready when a valvers in the car, but at the moment I'm still interested in tinkering with the AEE in its NA form as it seems to go well and surprise a few people.

Just given this thread an almighty clean up, deleted 15 pages of shite basically!

A lot of posts between things were deleted, so apologies if some things dont make sense!

Needs an update, might do it today depends how photobuckets playing AND if I can even remember what I have done between now and the last update!

Awesome thread dude! Love the look of the bay, much prefer that to all the smoothed and tucked nonsense!

Right, deeeeep breath now.

So I didnt really do anything after GTI Fest, went for a hack on NYE with Jamie ..

f112389de5389d01c59765765bdbe29e_zpsef40

Then went RR day..

603074_10200669013193482_1076953227_n_zp

After that, I set about sorting the megajolt out, and tidying up my engine bay.

So I started by getting the trigger wheel sorted, this involved changing to the earlier V belt type pulley for chassis leg clearance.

Machined myself a hub-centric spacer for the trigger wheel to sit on..

60fce9b00ba03650cb67ff302e8caf39.jpg

This was to clear the dish of the pulley.

Messing around for clearance, mocking up a crank sensor bracket...

Also machined myself a blank for the distributor, and made a bracket to hold the coil pack..

I then decided as I was going to be redoing some wiring etc, id tidy up the engine bay and a few other bits and bobs.

So started taking stuff apart/getting rid of stuff

Had a few teething problems with the megajolt to begin with, but got it all sorted.

I have not mapped it properly (or had it mapped) just did a bit of tweaking on some supplied maps with a friend one night, its noticably better through the range. Well worth it.

Took it to a RR with my mates mk1..

Heres a graph to compare dizzy vs megajolt, much better through the range, still the same peak power but torques improved massively.

calculatedfromtorquegraph_zps5716176b.jp

Also decided I wanted some shorter springs to get slightly lower, but this would mean they wern't retained at full droop, so got some super slim helpers too ;)

Next up I believe was GTI Spring Festival at pod...

They kinda forgot to set us out a club stand

Managed a 14.9 again, but there was an epic head wind unlike at Autumn Fest, and I dont think I hooked it up as well as I could have done, I'm pretty sure a faster time is capable with the megajolt for sure.

Next thing I believe was Stanford Hall, nice chilled day out...

So after Stanford was the track day at Cadwell park, set out early with JamieDub y0 at like 4.30am or something stupid... but hey I was excitedd!

trackday1_zpsc347d150.jpg

Had an issue in the morning involving fuel not wanting to be in the tank, preferring being on my rear tyre, thus putting me into the tyre wall..it took some investigation..

..and further prevention!

Sorry for the massive amount of pics, and I hope this is a good read for some.

Future plans, I have some, not sure whats for definate or not yet, but I have a new engine in pieces which will be going in later this year or early next Id imagine, see what this EFI lark is all about.

Nick

You put so much effort in it shames me.

Great read!

Rocco seats are great, really comfy and suit the car perfectly. Sweet car this!

  • Author

Thought Id just show a quick comparison of things..

So this is the engine bay around Oct last year, and how it is now, so obviously tidied wiring, get rid of washer bottle, changed cam cover, you may have noticed that some fixings etc have changed to stainless - subtle things.

Then

Now

Plans wise, well I'm going to keep a bit quiet on that, spoils all the fun writing a big list of it all, however now I have a daily I'm relatively happy with,

5cc2327c270fb5eae73443b854812ddc_zpse177

..I dont mind compromising a bit more on this to make it suitable for track etc :)

Thanks for nice comments x

Loving the effort that has gone into this.

Quickie though how fiddly was it to fit those bonnet struts?

I have a set in a box but i havn't looked into fitting them yet thanks

  • Author

Thanks mate.

And dead easy, just replace one of the bonnet hinge bolts for the ball joint thing and screw the other into the wing, may even go in place of a wing bolt IIRC

One of my fav cars on here now, looks great. Love the on track pick from behind!

Looked for this thread for ages Nick, glad I finally stumbled onto it! Really nice work dude, a proper clean well engineered polo!

Engine wise, got a 1.6 16v in pieces, well an AVY/AFH, gonna finish stripping that, and get some bits dropped off for balancing etc soon, also going to be ordering a management system soon, think I need around 250cc injectors, but going to hold off and see what fitment my ITBs are going to be first.

Couple of plans chassis wise too but all in good time.

& Tom, you probably struggled to find it as it was hidden, I spent ages deleting loads of stuff and reopened it

Ah right cool man! I will have some cleaned and flow tested G60 injectors available after GTI fest dude as I'm upgrading to 320's, dont mind giving you first refusal :D

Edited by etches69

  • Author

Well, 170hp @ 80% duty cycle & 3.0 bar fuel pressure is a 278cc roughly, so I'd imagine 250cc g60 ones be okay

if your buying new management id deffo be interested in the megajolt stuff

Thanks mate.

And dead easy, just replace one of the bonnet hinge bolts for the ball joint thing and screw the other into the wing, may even go in place of a wing bolt IIRC

thanks i appreciate it ill give it a go

Shopping list engine wise:

Stuff for engine rebuild (shells, rings, tappets etc)

Machinining/balancing of engine bits

ITBs

Make inlet manifold

G60 injectors

Inline fuel pump

Pressure regulator

Blue temp sensor (anyone got resistance values to save me measuring?)

Inlet air temp sensor

GTI crank sensor & connector (anyone got an AVY one they're not in need of?)

Management system

Ignition driver

Map sensor

Throttle position sensor

Wrap exhaust mani

New custom exhaust

Gonna get back on this soon, have got a list of parts together, so can start ordering stuff soonish. Need to speak to my local engine shop regarding head skimming, block honing, balancing etc.

Need to see if g60 injectors will fit the ITBs I'm getting as they're off a bike I think they maybe smaller.

May run down the strip at action this weekend, hopefully less wind so maybe able to beat the 14.9 :)

I was originally going to stick with carbs, as IMO they're sufficient for what I will be using the car for, pretty simple to work with, and to be honest I have no reliability issues with them whatsoever. Coupled with the megajolt it would be a strong setup, however, a lot of other people are running carbs now, and there will be a couple of 1.6 16v's on them, so I'm using them just as its a little different, in theory better (not sure about peak power better) but drivability should be better (although with the variable Venturi bike carbs I'm not entirely convinced) and I'd just like to learn something new; I'm looking forward to tinkering with mapping and refining it, although this one will be going somewhere for a mapping session when iv got it somewhere near and I'm happy with it, to optimise it fully, which IMO the only real way to see gains is on a RR, I don't think my arse is sensitive enough to notice 1 or 2nm of torque here and there

Now your in the 14s what are you hoping to crack on the strip now?

  • Author

No idea to be honest, the car feels a little odd recently, I need to get my laptop on it as the megajolt seems to be going on a weird one recently, it reads RPM & loading correctly, so let's say

20% throttle, 2500rpm should be 22 degrees ignition (not got map to hand, so just an example)

Which it reads correctly, but it will sit lower down the map and be at like 17 or something, even though it knows where it is.

I fixed it the other week but can't help but feel as though it's maybe gone funny again.

A 14.7 would be nice, but to be honest it's all about the launch with such little power, at the end of the day it's an MA 1.6 8v, it's already done better than I expected
