Largest engine conversion into Mk2f (mk3) polo

Featured Replies

Hi all what is the biggest engine to be fitted I to a mk2/mk3 polo? Iv been told it was a vr6??

Is that correct? I'm just trying to find out so I no how large the bay is on the polo and the clearance from the subframe to the bonnet..

They don't have subframes. Main obstacles are the bonnet and the tarmac. Some crazy stuff's been done, but practically speaking, once you get bigger than a 1.6 AEE, you're going to have to chop the front end of your car to bits and stick it back together.

That's what I wonted to no :)... Thanks for that.. Iv been told that vr6 lumps and kR 16vs have been fitted to them, I'll take it that's not so true??

How much clearance would you say there is under the hood from Tarmac to bonnet?? Or for a tall block engine am I better off with a 6n?

The Salzmann frame makes it more possible to fit a tall block to a none-subframed Polo. Still a lot of work though.

So basically to fit a tall block to an old polo it would need to have a subfrane

Would an engine measuring 557mm from the sump to cam cover and 850mm from crank pulley to the end of the gearbox fit under the bonnet of a mk2/mk3 or 6n

Well it's not as simple as that, see. The stock engine/gearbox is almost too wide, the chassis was designed around it so there's a dent in the o/s chassis leg for the alternator pulley and the n/s chassis leg is perfectly shaped to go over the end of the gearbox - at their widest point the stock engine/gearbox won't fit between the chassis legs! That's why it has to be heavily tilted if you wanna pull it out with an engine crane.

So any wider, the gearbox has gotta fit right under the chassis leg, obviously that's governing the crankshaft line, which puts the sump on the floor. Then almost immediately across, the next object to foul is the.. tyre. It's only an inch or so as standard.

The steering rack is high up on the bulkhead, so if you're looking at an exhaust manifold on the back, you've gotta factor that in too.

It's not a very forgiving bay, the cars are deceptively small (look at one parked next to a classic mini).

But 6n bays aren't much bigger, and someone's managed to get a 4.2 V8 in one of those..

No ones seemed to mention the RHD issue. You'll find more VRs have been done on the continent as they are LHD and the servo is on the other side iirc which makes it less in the way. Just another factor to consider...

Thanks for the reply.. I'm not after putting in a vr6 I was just using it as am example..

No idea. But I've got a mk2 with no engine in up at my workshop just north of nottingham. Bring your tape measure if you want?

Benefit of a Mk1-3 Polo is it's small and light, so deceptively agile. Weighing it down just isn't the way forwards for me.

I'll get back to you on when I can come up.. How far up from Nottingham are you??

The engine that's going to be going in won't weigh it down Much more it's a 1.6l

1.6? You ain't gonna break any records squeezing a 1.6 in..

You haven't used the search function, have you?

Vtec surely ?

Vtec surely ?

Another great jap engine would be the static Toyota one of the time, as found in the first MR2. Not as good as the Honda engine in the first v-Tec CRX and Civic though.

Isn't a Vtec the other way round? So gbox is on the drivers side as it rotates the opposite way or some shit? That might help for room

Yep, all the Hondas are like that, the 2.2/2.3 versions would be worthy looking into but the 1.8/2.0 are probably the ones to research for the Polo..?

Might be getting ahead of things here - he's probably thinking of a Golf Driver engine

yer honda builds there engines the other way round so its like looking at most engines from the drives seat.

Hahaha, where you putting the charger/turbo,

I have done reasearch haha but it's not a vw engine ;)

best engine in my opinion to put in would be a 1.6 6n2 gti engine with the fuel injection/loom working

the biggest you could possibly fit? anything in that would fit front or back size wise, someone was trying to put a v8 in the back of a mk2 polo

4.2 V8 in a 6n? hmmmmmm is it really worth all the hassle?????

stick a mazda rotary engine in ;)

Apparently it wasn't as much hassle as it sounds - transverse mounted with a VR6 gearbox, so not far from a siamese tall block with twin heads..

The VTEC installation I've seen done to an 86C chassis'd Polo used a space framed front to fit it in. The guy is out Bury St Edmunds way, don't know if it's finished now.
