iv had my HID kit on the coupe for some time now but just wanted to ask that when i turn my headlights on my side lights and main beam go on together so cant just have my side lights on.

normally when you push the switch once the side lights come on then the main beam on second but in my case they both light up on the first push.

does anyone have the same problem? its a polo coupe 1993 with h4 HID kit

If you had a look through the search pages you would of found the answer to this, It's the "Dim-Dip" system that was an EU regualtion in the 90's to stop you driving with just the sidelights on so it puts a lower voltage onto the dip beam with the engine running, easy to fix just disconnect the resistor Yellow plug, not sure where it is on your year but from 95 onwards it's behind the passenger side indicator

before i fitted the hid kit i could choose to have either my side lights on or dip beam.

but since having the kit fitted i cant seperate them - been like that since kit was fitted!!

Unless you modified the wiring As standard, with the light switch selected to sidelights with the ignition off, just the sidelights would of come on, then if with the light switch still on just sidelights you turn the ignition ON or start the engine, the headlights will come on dipped beam, but not full dipped beam strength, then if you selected normal headlights on the selector switch the dip beam would increase in light output, due to now getting full 12v To get around this you simply disconnect the Yellow plug from the "Dim-Dip" resistor and then with the light switch on sidelights only the sidelights will come on with or without the ignition ON or engine running and the dip beam will come on and be at full brightness when you select normal headlights on the selector switch

with HID's they can fire at lower voltage (iirc, 8-9v on some!) so there will have always been power to the headlights with engine running and 'sidelights' on, but because the normal headlights are filament, when they get too low a voltage, they just dimly glow, giving the impression it's just sidelights which are on, when in actual fact, it's both.

Now the HID's are getting a voltage they can use from the dimdip, they will come on at full brightness (you can't dim HID's by giving them less voltage, like you could with halogens)

Unplug the dimdip as stated, and this WILL resolve the issue.
