4 speed gearbox with 1.4 16v?

Featured Replies

I have a 4 speed gearbox in my mk3 polo, and a 1.4 16v engine waiting to be put in, will the 4 speed fit the 1.4 engine? Or will I need a 5 speed?

I am doing the same with mine so I'm presuming i use my mk2 starter and clutch? ?? Have you done yours leo? ?? With the 4 speed? ??

Read the faq on the 16v conversion. Its all in there

Why you'd want the 4 speed though...

Terrible economy

6k at 70.

POWER BAND, yo.

my 4 speed actually comes in around 4k at 70 if i remember rightly

Probs cos he cant afford a 5 speed at the moment or somethin.

Normal people would say wait untill you buy a 5 speed to change the engine and box at the same Time..

Unfortunately I'm not normal. Hence i fitted a 5 speed a week before i took the whole lot out again to do a conversion.. hahaha

4 speed FTW

I'm tempted to fit it to mine just for the crack, even though i've put time and effort into painting my 5 speed ha

The 4 speed and 5 speed boxes from the mk2 era have the same ratios, except the 5 speed has an extra gear on top..

This isn't true.

Fourth in a 4sp is about the same as fifth in some, but it depends on the engine size. The fourth in a Formel.E box I had was longer than a 4+E coupe S and that was way longer than a 1.0 box.

There's an FAQ on gear ratios, dunno how much pre-'90 info is in it though, and more the point, pre-'86..
