Hi guys and gals I'm in bit of a dilemma, well kind of then haha.

Basically I've already owned a 1.4 8v 6n, it was a little beast loved every bit of driving it and in essence would love just a bit more power.

Bearing in mind I'm only 19 turning 20 at the end of the year, so insurance is a big issue, apparently my area is a high crime area as well.

Basically there are 3 potential cars I'm looking at here:

1) 1.4 16V POLO 6N

2) 1.4 16V POLO 6N2 (75bhp model) or 100bhp model

3) A mk3 golf (which engine???)

About the mk3 golfs, which engine is actually decent, power wise, insurance wise and also kind of cheap to run.

Why didnt they do a 1.4 16v golf mk3 :(

After looking at so many mk3 golfs I've fallen in love with the shape e.g. if you know of Indy Bharjs golf vr6, it just makes me want to get a golf mk3, but there engine selection isnt excellent.

So what would you do in my situation, which would you get.

yeah it was a beast to me :) But they are the only cars I'm interested in atm, i wanna stay strictly vag mate

Don't get a Mk3 unless its a VR6, as the GTi models are slower then the Mk2 Golf GTi's.

True was thinking that tbh, 2.0 8v gti mk3's i heard are slow as f**k

So then that rules out the mk3 golf, until i can afford to run and get insured on one.

So that leaves:

1) 6n 1.4 16v

2) 6n2 1.4 16v (100bhp)

3) 6n2 1.4 16v (75bhp)

Which would be best do you think, for running costs, insurance etc

It's not much lighter, and the Lupo is far more of a girls car than the Polo - look at the front of it! Plus it has half the boot space, and only seats four people to the Polo's five.

It's less practical purely for the sake of looking like a rear-ended Noddy car with a saggy arse - if that's not a girly thing i don't know what is!

the only time id want a lupo, is if i was gonna rip the engine and gearbox out to have a 6 speed GTI engine in my mk2. ugly fuckin things.

i wouldnt mind a 6N2 myself for a daily, look nicer than 6N,s and have a much nicer dash

i'd go for the 6n out of those. the alloy block 6n2 engines are know for being a bit shit, at least the afh in the 6n 16v is a fairly good engine and pretty tunable if you are into that sort of thing. they look a little dated inside compared to your 6n2 i'd imagine but if you get a later one the dash is a little better looking than the earlier ones

they do rust tho and a lot of the one's on the market can be a little "tired" through neglect or just general wear so finding a non rusty one in good condition might not be as easy as you might imagine

Thought about a 6n2 tdi? 75bhp standard and with a few small mods and a remap you can get near enoug 110bhp and it will still do 60-70MPG

Glad you've swayed away from the mk3 golf they are all gutless even the 2.0 16v

Obviously the vr6 is quick but that's not realistic.

6n2s are a good all rounder I think comfy alot more modern than the 6n too, as for lupus apparently being more manly than a polo I'm simply confused.

Not quicker than the 100bhp 6n2! my mate has one and I leave it behind all the time.

Also, to be honest you want to steer clear of the 100 engines (trust me I own one), engines are tappy as fuck and it will get on your nerves!!!

don't have it no more some dirty insignia driving pervert wrote it off. was on 148k with no engine issues mind guy......... miss that car but saving up for my early mid life crisis.but on the 100hp 6n2 torque-wise it has an identical figure to the 8v and its only from 3k up you start to pull away from 8v's however get a relatively decent one and you can have a good all round car, I used to get 53mpg on a run, was nippy and could surprise a few folk when they got in (note I said nippy, not fast) roomy, comfortable got some toys too. I would give me right arm to go back in time and leave a few mins later on the day some vauxhall driving berk didn't see a queue of stationary traffic ans sandwihed me between a focus and an S-type. also they have a 4 star safety rating and insurance when I was 19 with 2 years NCB was 1400 and dropped to 1000 when I hit 20.

first one was no-one wanted it after I put it up on here after some berk in a mazda reversed into the side and dented the door, so I stripped some of the more valuable bits off, the second was pure accident/ dangerous driving from the berk who couldn't see stopped traffic in broad daylight.

despite damaging the jag I hit the front end was perfect still, had a small kink in the chassis causing the write off. it's not like I have been razzing about and crashed it like most folk my age.

mk3 golfs, the abf engined 150bhp 16v aint too bad - i've got one. Cost me £1100 with 55k on the clock, body is solid and drives well with a bit of poke. Average 34mpg too.

much prefer one to a 6n2, but that's my opinion. INsurance wont be cheap though.

three years lad been on t'road, I weren't in the Mk2 at the time, it was parked. it is unlucky considering both weren't my fault.

back on topic the 6n or 6n2 16v is very near damn the same 0-60 as an 8v GTI mk3.

So do some Toledos if you want a saloon.

I dunno why people dislike the 16V so much. Yeah the 8V is garbage, in terms of calling it a GTI. But the 16V is a good car. Economical when you want to potter about. Spacious and comfortable. Plus you can have some fun with it if your a bit bored. Its not the fasted thing in the world but you can annoy a lot of cars with it. It'll do an effort 100MPH on your own private motorway. Hydraulic clutch is nice and light in traffic. There is so many OEM upgrades you can do to it that aren't particularly expensive. Isn't a hard or expensive car to maintain or run.

Mines in a Vento but its basically a mk3 Golf really. I'm going from a VR6 back to my 16V as its a better all round car. VR6 sounds better and goes better but costs a lot more to fuel.
