Towing a vehicle

Featured Replies

For driver licensing purposes there are no vehicle/trailer weight ratio limits for category B+E.

Is'nt there some restrictions on towing speeds? depending on the weight of the item being towed in relation to the weight of the tow vehicle if it's less than 75% then you can tow @ 50MPH greater than 75% then your limited to 30MPH and if the trailer is unbraked there are also speed restrictions??

towing speed limits (unless signed otherwise):

30mph for built up areas

50mph for single carriage-ways

60mph for dual carriage-ways and motorways

your owners manual might state lower towing speeds according to weight.

If you took your test after 1997, a catagory B entitlement only goes up to a 750kg trailer.

thats a common misconception, i thought it was the case until i did a bit of research and contacted the dvla.

Those restrictions I mentioned were in force when we used to have a caravan back in the late 70's but it seems they are no longer in force ??

i wouldn't be surprised, speed limits don't change often and the speed limits i mentioned are still in force. ;)

here's a link to the directgov website.

edit: i know what you're saying about about the weight ratio of the car and trailer but i can't see any further restrictions regarding speed limits.
