S-Line 89 saloon, 1.8 20 valve turbo project

Featured Replies

Right this is my other Polo project which will be finished before i start the Polo MK1(maybe).

The base car is an 89 Polo saloon 998cc which i brought for a cheap run around till the mot ran out. It was to become our project car, But i then brought the MK1 Polo so plans changed.

It is now going to be used by me as a run around and project.

Here are some pictures of the car before we started any work.

To get it back on the road i need to do the following work.

Replace both outer seals

Replace starter motor

Repair puncher on driver front tyre

My plan is to get it running then sort out the suspension then work out what to do with the engine.

started work on the repairs

The strip down of body trims

need to order some seals and a new front single light grill.

should get some more done over the weekend.

ok spent the night thinking about what engine to put in.

so choices are:-

16 valve ABF

16 Valve KR

or a 20valve Turbo

Toying with the 20 valve turbo :-D as plan on putting a KR in My mk1 coupe.

Just wondering what you guys think

Interesting choices. All won't go in without a fair bit of work. You might want to consider a Salzmann front subframe to allow you to squeeze a tall block in too.

Ruled the the ABF as you can make the same if not more power from a KR, and i plan to run a KR in my MK1 polo so do not relay want to put one in this.

So Gonner go with the 20 valve.

200 poneis here we come :-D

any one need a standard 998 with a five speed gearbox?????

Also done some swopping of parts which now seems pointless as they will all come off again at some point.

mm specs on them wheels :) ?

why not a g40 engine? you can get over 200bhp and itl probably cost less than converting it all to 1.8t

Indeed it will. Adirable as a 20v would be, considering the work involved, and an engineering challenge it may be, it may be a little unreachable. Unless you have lots of money and bare fabricating skullz then its easy for this kind of project to get out of hand, and never finished. Personally I haven't ever considered such a project because I dont have the things mentioned above. And I'm not wanting to piss on your parade because I'm a nice person, but there's been a few of these kind of projects start in here never to reach fruition. They normally end up getting broken to make the money back, which seems a shame as this looks like a solid example.

200bhp (reliable, meh?) is possible with a G40 turbo. 1.4 1W bottom end, bored to 1.5, garret GT25 turbo, g40 big valve head with specific map and cam, with some other tasty mods should take you beyond that. If you have the money for a 20v conversion, then you should be able to afford all that.

If you can do the 20v, I can't wait to see it. But for some reason, because the polo resembles the golf, the assumption seems to be that all conversions for the golf are possible. Prove me wrong please, but you may want to consider the above.

I should have a single lamp grille however!

Straight from the horses mouth ;)

SLA - think you're starting to see what people are saying.. the Polo wasn't engineered for the tall block lump (golf engines don't fit, basically).

But it's been done, plenty of times. G60, VR6, KR, 1.8T, all been done.

All you'll hear about a 'Salzmann subframe', basically some dude made a subframe back in the day and anyone competent can make one. I personally don't see the problem. To run a 1.5 G40T cranked up to 225bhp is gonna cost a fortune compared to a 225 spec 1.8T straight out the breakers, with a few minor hurdles like driveshafts / engine mounts / subframe and a pair of suitably sized wishbones for it (you'll have to bin the front suspension, enabling you to use that from a superior handling car, preferably french!).

Obviously there is still great support for the G40's though, check out http://www.clubg40.co.uk

Thanks for all the replies guys.

i am going to do the 20 valve conversion for the main reason that it is not done that often and making it fit will be half the fun.

we are able to do all the fabrication needed and the engine side of things, may put the engine on a KMS standalone as i can map it myself but we shall see.

Have thought long and hard about this and all the problem you guys have mentioned we know we can over come. I am going to keep an account of the money spend so that i can give you an idea of DIY cost.

Will also post details of the build on here.

Thanks for the input

will up date next week

Transmission code is 8P which makes it a 5 speed

part no would be 085 300 044 AX

Final drive 65:16

hope that all helps

Thanks in advance

8p box, beautiful :)

Are the linkage and box mounts also available? What sort of price are you after? Any whines or crunches?

8p box is good for cruising around, but third gear is horrible when your giving it some

I'm after a good cruising box mate, do 40 miles a day for work so want something that will settle down on the motorways

I used to do that sort of mileage with it every day on motorways and it was great even with the 998.

will not take it out till i get my 20 valve though.

PM me with and offer on the box, i ran fine with no noises.

These are my thoughts on the subject, not sure about the french bit though!

^^ You say that until you realise that mounting Megane lower wishbones to your subframe would be an easy way to transform the handling.

What you talking about eric? 3rd gear is awesome in mine when 2nd tops out, or changing down from 5th to third to overtake, WIN.

i hate the rev drop man! it drops out of the powerband too much on a valver IMO

if i'm at 7,000rpm in 2nd and i go into 3rd, i drop to 3,600rpm - that's droppin!

has the car been lowered at all in this picture?? what size rubber??
