Got to agree, I've driven a lot of shit old cars from beetles to chevettes (and a lot of others inbetween) and as bad as they were back in the day, once you have driven something like a diesel focus you really appreciate the fun factor these old shit cars have

On account of I'm evidently going to be fighting a losing battle here, there's really not much more I can be arsed to add.

Back when the Beetles, Chevettes and Mk2 Polos were new, there were plenty of people saying these new things were dull and shit. Difference is a few decades forward and we're now able to laugh off the nobbly bits as "character"

For example, I've driven the Volkswagen UK heritage fleet Beetle. It's a giggle for a short drive, but fuck going any distance in it. And that's a really good one.

On the other hand, the up! is a giggle which you could still go the distance in. And that's a modern car.

That doesn't work on all of us. I'm sure i've driven more cars under 10yr old than you have, and probably under five. Not that i've enjoyed doing so.

Yep, any Escort after 1981 really. But i'd rather drive a 1989 Escort 1.3 Popular than have to drive an '07 TDCi Focus again (nfi what spec it is, got 5-spokes but don't they all).

Speaking as someone who has driven a fair few mid 80's mid spec escorts and fiesta's (as well as many other mid and pov spec 80's cars) I have to disagree. 80's Fords like that were underpowered and as standard the handling wasn't great but they were fairly light and gave feedback from the road. The diesel focus is pretty dull engine wise, but add to that a lot more weight, over assisted power steering and fly by wire throttle and it feels more like one of those arcade driving sims than an actual car. The only thing I liked about that car was the center rear seat belt was a full proper seat belt and not just a lap belt, and that was literally the only thing I like about the whole car

The focus was so dull that after month I couldn't take much more and sold it off to buy a diesel sierra that I've now been rocking for at least 4 or more months and still enjoy using as a daily family car and a comfortable mile muncher. It's lack of power can be frustrating at times but it's a diesel so its no more than I expected, but other than that i enjoy driving it and I prefer driving it to the focus, but above all I chose this over the focus

Give me a 1.4 mk4 escort popular over a 1.6 focus any day of the week, I know you can have fun in the escort because I have done many times in the past. Yes they were dull compared to the earlier escorts but unfortunately that's a pattern that seems to of continued since then especially in the 'normal' car market

Looking at cars on the internet is all well and good. But you'd be a lot better off just picking a few that take your fancy and actually driving them :)

I can apprciate new cars because they're leaps and bounds on from cars even 20 years ago. But they just always leave me feeling a bit hollow and miss that sparkle that older cars have.

Saying that, my MX5 didn't have that 'sparkle' despite being highly rated as good cars...

5 grand i would buy a fully restored swallowtail mk1 golf with a modern engine in (20vt or PD lump), and be able to insure it for sub 400 quid. Modern day reliability in a shoebox and something that will, if looked after, only appreciate in value!

fast, cool, cheap to insure, cheaper running costs that the equivalent engine in a newer car (insurance, fuel as theres less weight to lug around)

but I've been driving old cars as dailys for 9 years now and still cant even comtemplate how boring my life would be if i succumbed to a bland box

I think you'd struggle to find a fully restored swallow tail for that, never mind one with that sort of engine conversion. My mate sold his standard unrestored (tbf it didn't need it) swallow tail for around 5k a few years back. You'd probably be lucky to find a normal mk1 20vt for 5k

I beg to differ, I've found two in 5 minutes on a couple of forums, albeit not swallowtails, theres a fair few more at higher initial prices but price drops to 5.5-6k means they can be feasibly had for 5k.

Until you come to a bend. When the local police started using these we got chatting to one of the traffic cops who was in one, he said they were great in a straight line but were fucked if who ever they were chasing got into the lanes. A local smack head once got away from them in a metro by doing just that

Pretty much the same as my tweaked Saab 9000 Aero was. It had silly torque and decent power, so was great in a straight line - but useless on twisties.
