I'm considering doing this. Not that i'll need to with 130bhp pulling 720kgs, but i haven't put the box in the car yet so whilst it's out..

That is presuming VW still sell them, that i can find out but they're less helpful for torque figures, i'll only do it if someone can confirm the torque figure for these bolts..?

Bilco has done it check his build thread and ask him

I'm sure he used standard hi tensile 10.9 Allen cap head bolts

The rivets are 9mm diameter so he got the crown wheel holes drilled out to 10mm for m10 bolts

From the Group N rally car homologation paperwork the bolts are M9x1x26 Part # 6NV 409 359 and from ElsaWin

Removing

‒ → Drill off rivet heads, if equipped, with 12 mm drill from depression side and drive out with drift.

Gearboxes with bolted final drive gear wheel

‒ Assemble differential and gear wheel with special bolts.

Tightening torque

Final drive gear to differential 70 Nm

Thanks v much for the advice you guys.

So it'd seem that VW actually do the replacement bolts/nuts themselves?

That part number for the bolts in the previous posting is for the LSD which has threaded holes in the diff, but the nuts/bolts for standard diff's are listed on Etka

26) 020409136 press fit bolt M9X1X30 1.5 €uros

27) 085409168 lock plate / shaft - differential pinion 0.5 €uros

28) 085409167 packing plate 2.3 €uros

29) N 90007801 hexagonal nut M9X1 2.85 €uros

30) No part number listed

So should it just be 26/29 that are needed following removal of rivets?

26 & 29 definately rqd, 27 is a lock plate to ensure the bolt does'nt work loose, can't quite workout what 28 is for?? but as it's the most expensive I'd guess it's important?? I'd also use plenty of thread lock compound

Looks as though it goes from one bolt to another, like on driveshafts?

Agreed, although you'd need an even number of bolts to use those plates surely? Otherwise some would overlap.

Is the LSD still available to buy over parts desk? Does it fit all 085? Must cost a right wedge.

...and the rivet issue must be recognised by VW being as they can supply the nut and bolt combo instead?

Message people on eBay who sell reconned boxes writing a massive essay about how they replace them etc, se if they'll post you a set

There's six holes, the five in the crownwheel drawing is an error - The 3x dual hole load plates are already there, as the rivets use them too.

The part # for the LSD is 6NV 409 111 the price on the paperwork is 1087.5 €uros but that is many years ago !!

#28 must be a locking plate for the nuts??

So you need 6x nut/bolt/lock plate?

Ouch so probably at least £1000 by now.

6ea #26

6ea #27

6ea #29

Mikey says the #28 is there on the riveted diffs so you won't need them?? just re-use them ?

It would be interesting to see if VW still stock the diff and what current price is :?

Mine (photo only a couple of weeks old), from a late 6n. Doesn't show much i'm afraid! The three plates are on the other side, but it gives more of an idea for anyone who hasn't seen one open.

Loads of pics from previous units on old phone, but it's dead.

Cheers guys sounds good. Will probably do recon over winter.

As for LSD, will go to sleep and dream that I have bought one :/

Almost fingered myself when I opened that link.

So, would that fit any 085? Like the one in my 6N?

It's obviously over kill by the way, but awesome for your spec list... If you had more money than sense, that is.

I'll have an 085 Quaife LSD for sale soon. £585 plus postage.

Probably a dumb question, but what does replacing the rivets do? Does it improve something or is it because the rivers break?

The rivets break

Rivets break causing excess play and failure of diff bearings.

Then the gbox shits itself and that's why most 085 boxes don't last past 60/70k.
