Well here it is. Polo number 4 to enter my ownership. Picked it up yesterday, for £175, with MOT till feb, and a bit of tax left. Its a poverty spec 1.0l. In white, green and rust.

Only bought it because it was 10 minutes away, and cheap. I have no idea what i'm going to do with it, other than replace the door and wing for decent white ones.

For a 6n, the sills are very good, as are the rear arches, some bits of surface rust, but nothing major, also needs a couple of tyres, but they are a very cheap size. Mainly its just faded and really dirty, which along with the damage, really brings it down. It even has leccy mirrors, clear indies and MP3 stereo, and came with a free haynes and some blue bulbs!! Parking it near my coupe was a real beauty and the beast moment

I started work on it today. Its already looking alot better than it did.

Cleaned out the rear arches, and found a hole . Seemed solid, but turns out the dirt was holding it together. Had a poke about everywhere, and thats the only rot:

Then I Washed it. Its amazing the amount of dirt that came off it. Seems like it hadn't been washed properly since it left the dealers :

Dead flat paint on the bonnet, same as everywhere else:

So got the G3 out. Cut the paint back to a pretty decent shine. Resulting in this. Proof you CAN polish a turd :

Found the old neon lupo trims from my MK1 in the shed. Put them on this. Made a huge difference, as all the wheels are the same colour:

Also noticed these. WTF :

Been out and bought some sand paper, zinc primer, white primer and filler to repair some of the surface rust. And also bought 4 cans of candy white spray.

May have found myself a white door and wing, so hopefully be replacing the ruined ones soon. Need to hit the scrappys for some bits of trim and some extras on the cheap.

Need some number plates too, as front one is smashed. Judging by that, and the fur stuck in the lower grille, it has been fox hunting at some point

Made a little progress on this in the last few days. I fixed the pushed in lower grille, and got rid of the fox fur. Took the splitter off and put it back on straight (all makes a difference). Today i went to Harry bucklands scrappy, in Gloucester, after a heads up from a mate that they had a white 6n in. The lead turned up good :-)

There was a white 3 door 8v in there. And it had the drivers door and wing, both dent and rust free! The first part of the reg was strangely similair to mine, being S660, to my S550. I even met one of that cars previous owners- what are the chances of that!

After nearly 2 hours of struggling, the door and wing (how many bolts does there want to be!) were off. Also took a few bits of trim. I handed over £40 for the lot, and took it back to my MK3. Only to find there was no way the 6N door was going to fit in . Had to leave it there. Will be going back for it when my dads off work on friday, so we can take the van.

I bought a new set of number plates yesterday to replace the tatty ones on it. Another bargain at just £9. So decided to remove the old ones today. Had to cut a slot in the screw heads of the front one as they were rusty. Tryed that tecnique on the rear ones, and the screw heads just crumbled, so tryed drilling them. That didnt work either, as there was a washer rusted to the screw. Had to cut them off in the end

What do people think so far? I know its not alot but, this project is very low budget Door and wing will be going on at some point next weekend. Should improve it alot.

Plates were from ebay mate :-) Various sellers doing them for around a tenner.

How hard were the side air vents to replace as some one's broken mine :(

Easiest thing ever. There arent even any screws. They just push in. You can pull the centre vents out with your hands. A small flat blede screw driver will help ease the side vents out :-)

Sometimes you see great things by mistake :-) This may only end up as temporary measure, as what i really want is an early MK2 next. I've had a MK1, 2 MK3's and this MK4. So i'm slowly working my way through the polo models :-D

Got a bit done over the last few days.

Sorted out the mess i made of the rear number plate mount points. Used a hammer to tap them back (were a bit bent) and also removed some rust, and put a thin skim of filler and rubbed it back smooth. they're now ready to be sprayed:

Got some smoked side repeaters for £3:

Fitted the front number plate as the new ones arrived. Looks much better, and stuck on with super strong 3m, so wont be going anywhere:

Started work tidying up the left rear arch. Ground back the rust, and treated it with kurust. Also got rid of the hole that was on the inside edge :-)

Then it started raining, so Made a start on cleaning the seats, as the interior is as filthy as the outside was. Got most of the dirt off the drivers seat :-).

Managed to get out to this today, and made good progress on the rear arch. Put a skim of filler over what i ground back and treated yesterday and sanded down. Ground back, treated and filled/ sanded 2 more smaller bubbles further up the arch. Repair is now almost complete and in white primer. There are a few little imperfections that i will attend to, then its time for sanding, more primer, and top coat :-) :

9 hour round trip nearly. Just over 500 miles. I'll think about it.....

Collected the door today, no pics yet but we all know what a door looks like. 6N doors are F%*kin heavy! I can quite easily move a beetle door with 1 hand, but i struggle to even lift this on my own!

Its now decided to not run properly, and is missing badly. Something else to sort . Take a look in the Engine section on here for more info on the problem, if anyone can help?

What is the ultimate plan for this then? Doing it up and selling it, winter hack?

I'm going to see how i feel when its finished. Could go either way, or if it continues to behave like it is at the moment, its getting broken!

Started preparing for the new wing and door today. Got most of the front end stripped and removed the old green wing:

Yesterdays activity on this involved the right side sill. I am prioritising this side over the other, as it needs to be sprayed before the new door and wing go on. Got the filling and sanding done, on the front half of the sill, and ground back and treated some rust on the arch. Put a few coats of white primer on the front section. As with the left arch, it has revealed a few areas that need further attention, but looks pretty good, well alot better than the rust:

Finally got a pic of my door. Its got a few scratches, and chips but is a whole lot better than whats on there :

Ordered a new temp sensor as well, which will hopefully solve the running issues i'm having.

Got quite a bit done on this today. It just so happened that a mate came over this morning, so we decided to put the door on while he was here. Got the old door unbolted, including the hinges as its easier that way. I then fitted the hinges from the new door, and we lowered the door on to them. Then i got it lined up and tightened all the bolts. Took a few attempts, but it now lines up nice, and opens and closes as it should (bit of rust on the bottom i hadnt noticed before):

After he left, i leant the old door against the car and stripped off the door card, wing mirror, winder and speaker pod:

Then i lay the door down, and carefully removed all the trim clips. Then the foam insulation panel, with a hairdryer to soften the glue and a scraper. It survived :

Then i got to work stripping the old door bare. Removed the latch and lock mechanism, interior pull handle, wiring, glass and window regulator:

I then set to work on the new door. This had central locking, and an electric window in it, along with tinted glass. All of which had to be removed. I first fitted the mirror. Then central locking motor and latch were swapped for the manual mechanism, and the door handle refitted.

The problem came when removing the glass and electric window regulator, as it was stuck closed. I had to undo all the bolts for the regulator and pull it down, then unbolt the motor so it could be dropped down enough to reach the glass clamp bolts. Once that was done, i let the regulator drop, and pulled both it and the glass free. I replaced it with the manual version, and fitted my original clear glass. I also swapped out the wiring. Resulting in this:

I then fiited the foam insulation, and inner door pull, while the weather had turned against me:

But it now looks worlds better. Just need to finish the paintwork, refit the rub strip and get the wing fitted on this side:

Good to see the rain didn't stop you. If your neighbours garage overhang (if that's what the columns are for) was say another 6 feet longer it would make an awesome little space to work on cars (apart from the hard ground obviously).

The rain did stop me, when it started to soak through my T-shirt Its just a little annoying that my parents didnt/ couldnt buy that house with the garage. This would be done by now.

Did a little bit more to this today.

Finished up where i left off yesterday, by refitting the speaker and the door card:

I then sprayed some white stone chip paint where the bottom of the wing mounts and round the right rear arch. I then fitted the wing, and the rest of the front end. Its now looking like a car again, and i have undamaged panels, that are the correct colour :-) :

Now isnt that an improvement over what i started with!?
