Right, Going to be running classics soon, Test fitted they wouldnt spin as i've got VWII calipers and Carriers, Just bought some VWI carriers, How do i swap them over?

Undo the 2 hex-head slider bolts.

Remove caliper.

Undo the 2 15mm headed bolts holding the carrier to the strut.

Remove carrier.

Swap carrier over...

And re-fitting is the reverse of removal .

Or if you can't be bothered with the above, the ghetto option is chop the wraparound section of the carrier off, using the VWI carriers for reference on where to cut.

The way I read it, he's retaining the calipers but swapping out the carriers.

Ye that makes sense, makes sense looking at an ATS classis too, flat spokes.... I'd be swopping to type1 carriers, its what i run :-) Until i fit vauxhall brakes anyway.

what do you mean?

VW11 carriers have a "cage" around them. VW1's dont. Otherwise there identical.

Unless I'm missing something on the VW11 carriers I have.

Sure you're not looking at the carrier wrong? I always have a square-peg-round-hole moment when I go to put VW1's back on their carriers

Calling it a brace is technically the most accurate, given it's job - sharing the load over both pad stops instead of just the leading one.

But of the millions of VWII's fitted to countless models of cars over three decades, only the early ones had the brace (last model being the G40 which just pipped the 8v Scirocco within a year). They did away with it by the 6n/ MK3 Golf, VWIIs were all braceless from there (though always direct to hub - never known a braceless bolt-on carrier to be VWII equipped from factory).

Surely if you remove the caliper from the carrier with the 6mm allen bolts the re fitment will become obvious once you go along? I fitted some vw11 from a 6n 1.4 automatic onto my vw1 carriers no problem apart from the stupid flexi hose fitment is different on the later calipers.

^^ See now I did the same with MK3 Golf VWII calipers on the same VWI carriers using the same pads, and these Golf3 ones had both the air scoop and normal earlier brake hose connector for my braided G40 hoses. Seems I got flukey with the selection that day.
