first time driver car insurance

Featured Replies

Hi all, I passed my test yesterday first time with only 1 minor! :D. Tried getting insurance for my 1 litre 6n polo yesterday and companys would either not insure me or they was coming it at 7-10,000 pounds which only being 17 is impossible for me to pay! So I'm just wondering where people get their first insurance policy from?

Congrats on the pass, what was the minor? £7-£10 grand? Fucking christ, where do you live? Try adding your parent(s) to your quote.

mine is through insure2drive, purely because elephant wont insure me with mods.

I pay 3500 a year.

could have lied about mods and got it much cheaper, but not worth it.

and before anyone says anything - i worked 8-5 everyday for months at less than five pound an hour to pay it off - not bank of mum and dad.

Thanks, the one minor was I slowed down abit too much before checking my mirrors. And yeh 7-10,000 it over the top I think! Its like they are trying to put people off driving and I will give them a call. :). I also live in wellingborough in northamptonshire post code is NN8

quinn direct? my first year was 987 quid and that was in 2009-10

when taking out the policy make sure you are the named driver, then add family members who are older and have had a clean licence for years.

I added my grand mother as a named driver, she is nearly 80 but has had her licence for years with plenty of NCB and it reduced my premium by £250 ;)

and it is cheaper to say that the car is parked on the road overnight rather than in your drive way.

Does declaring mods lower or increase insurance

Does she have a valid licence then, still driving with her own insurance policy? Licence must be renewed at 70 and every 3 years after.

Is your car actually parked on the road?

You are aware its illegal to falsify your information for the purpose of obtaining insurance?

Congratulations on passing! I'm actually from Wellingborough (freaky right?) and tried insuring a 1.0 6n2 with Admiral and got a quote for £2900 with both my mum and dad on the insurance, which is a lot cheaper than your quote but still not affordable... really don't know how they expect us to pay that kinda money :-(

Try Admiral/Elephant/Bell and Tesco and Liverpool Victoria are supposed to be cheap too, I'm gonna get a quote from them on Monday...

Good luck!

ring around your best bet

Hi mate, congrats on passing your test! I actually got 2 minors but one for slowing down too! I'm still not insured but I'm getting my quote out in November. My price is £710 on my MK3 1.0 with no mods. (Mods bring your policy price up) Best thing you can do when you have first passed is having a very basic 1.0 with no mods as prices are ALWAYS through the roof when you are 17. (I got quoted £4300 on a 6n2 1.4 8v when I was 17).

I'm now 19 and like I say mines came out at £710.

Best thing you can now do is sign up with Elephant, be as honest as possible, add 2 named drivers (women bring it down more, no idea why  ) say your parking it on the street over night, never say garage it's a fortune, no idea why. Now, put your car value as low as possible. Also, keep your annual mileage down as low as possible 5-6k for me seems to be reasonable. Try third party and fully comp as fully comp is now cheaper for me! Then put your excess thing at the highest you can possibly go. Mines at £250 but if I put it at £500 it doesn't change at all.

Oh, iv also only been passed 6 months and I have 0 years NCB, etc etc..

Sorry if none of this helps but Elephant always seems to be extremely cheap for me in comparison with ANY other company.

Good luck and congrats again, Collie! :D

I passed last month, tescos has been cheapest for me, if you get anybodys club card, that shops at tesco a lot it drops the quite up to 30%, my best quote is through them at £1870 with a £300 deposit!

Does declaring mods lower or increase insurance

in some cases mods can lower your quotes but it depends on the insurer and of corse the modifications,.

Adrian flux are meant to be good for modified cars and young drives worth a ring.

I'm 17 passed a month ago with 2 minors and have a 6n 1.0l which is my dads and insurance is £1800 with my dad as the main driver with 0 NCB through the co-op (this is not fronting I genuinely use the car less than him). When I looked for myself to be the main driver to build up some NCB cheapest was £3000 with a black box.
