would a 6n polo gearbox fit a Mk2/3

Featured Replies

Hey Guys i,ve been thinking about getting a 1.4 8v engine for my mk2f polo but I'm unsure if the gearbox would fit my car or would i need the mk2 5 speed gearbox for it??

Kinda unsure about what will and wouldn't fit this car as I'm sort of new...

Thanks Alex

So long as it's a rod-change, I think so, but the passenger driveshaft flange will be longer, so you'll either need a different driveshaft (dunno what) or to swap the flange for the one off your 4 speed.

so would i need the linkages and gear leaver or can I keep them the same?? and i'm assuming i could just use my driveshafts from the mk2

You use your linkages, you'll have to saw off the lower ancorage casting on the gearbox once the cable linkage is removed, because it'd be in the way of the ball remote (This obviously means it can never be used in a 6n again).

You can see where i've done it on this one. Note two tiny marks on the casing above and below, where the hacksaw just brushed it - take care, you don't wanna go through or it'll need welding (when it's far enough through, you can just break it off).

Driveshafts from a late mk3, L/M reg is what you want. Well, the driver's side one at least

Thanks for everything.. just didn't want to buy something and it didn't fit... so would the gearbox mounts be in the same place of would i need to swap them??

You'll need to use the mk2/3 mounts. If you have a 4-speed now, you'll need a 5-speed upper gearbox mount.
