Due to the shit British weather and having to do a 30 miles daily commute I've been considering getting a winter hack.

Been looking at mk3/4 Golf estates then stumbled across a mk2 Caddy pick up. To be honest I never knew they existed just because all it is is a rebadged Skoda.

Anyone had any experience of these? Diesel is assumebly the Polo 1.9? I just want something I can get in and drive and be able to chuck stuff in...

excellent fuel economy ,not the fastest in the world but eh .i had 1 for 2 yr and averaged 50-55 mpg .no probs really .

great little vans, loved mine. great on fuel (1.9 d) handed pretty well for what it was, reliable, practical, i'd have another for sure

My brother runs a 1.3 petrol. He abuses his vehicles and it just keeps going.

Main thing to look for is rust, mainly on the wings, sills and load bed depending on the life it's lived. The wings on his didn't have liners on, so it was the build up of crap on the inside that killed them.

Parts are dirt cheap even by old Polo standards. It's quick enough empty but does slow down quite badly when (over)loaded up.

Engines in them are the 1.3 Skoda SPI, 1.6 Volkswagen AEE SPI and the 1.9 Volkswagen SDI.

I'd have one, but I wouldn't pay a lot for it.

If I could get one for under a grand (cheaper the better) that works and has a decent MOT it'd be good.

I wouldn't expect it to be quick but I've got the Polo for fun, it'd purely be a workhorse.

Two seats struck me as being an issue but 99% of the time it's only me driving! It'd be handy to chuck my bike in too. Reluctant to put a muddy bike in my Polo :(

I dont know if you'd be wanting to lower it etc but I've heard the skodas are a nightmare for finding parts for. i think they use modified fieseta coilovers in order to lower them. I might be wrong though.

you can get -40mm lowering springs for them, theres a couple of other options if you want to lower them silly amounts. i picked mine up a couple of years ago for £350. sold it a year later for £700, which seems to be about the going rate for a reasonable one these days

I'm guessing the rear is on leafs so it'd be an axle flip and shackles... Not rocket surgery :p

£700 seems fair. Anyone know if the boxes are the the same as an 8p?

They're coilsprung front and back, I can't remember if the back is spring over shock or next to it, I've got a feeling it's the latter - so easy for airbags!

For the gearbox, are we talking about the 1.3/1.6 or 1.9D? I didn't recognise the 1.3 as being a VW box. The 1.6 (mainly found in the Fun) will use a mk4 polo box, and I'd guess the diesel does the same.

AEE is 1.6 MPI

AEA is 1.6 SPI

Yea I'd presume the VW engines would use a Polo box... Ideally I'd want the 1.9 DIEsel. I can see the 1.3 being pretty gutless :(

The 1.3's alright, bit like a Polo 1.3SPI. Just doesn't like carrying heavy loads or towing much. You and your pushbike'll be fine.

I did ponder a mk4 TDi and having the option to do some towing. But I don't have a trailer or this new license stuff. So that'll probably never happen!

Not many VW ones for sale so may be a Skoda. What's in a badge afterall!

they ok i had one slammed on fiesta mk5 springs all round heard mk1 focus fronts fit aswell they 0.1mm to big

but will fit engine is polo aef diesel. box is skoda on an adaptor plate heres my old one

They don't use Polo gearboxes, they use Skoda boxes on iron adaptor plates with heavy flywheels (1.9D and 1.6 AEE).

1.3 is a Skoda engine anyway, from it's Favorit base.

When you say mk5 fester, do you mean the one up to 2004 or the one after?

sorry i ment mk4/5 the bubble shape you have to open up the hub but they do fit

mine was sitting on rear chassis so was very harsh ride as coiles are just as dear as mk2 polo ones

rears just use the springs as they dont fit on shocks like a fiesta

Funnily enough i saw one of these floating about in the floods on the news last night!

I had a lowered one in about 2005 I have a feeling the suspension was a mix of mk2 and mk4 golf I used... I had the VW version
