Bought a mega jolt setup for my gay e e,

Off my mates fiesta zetec, which has a 36-1 trigger wheel on the back of the flywheel IIRC.

Just trying to work out what way of getting engine position is best.

I thought about a 36-1 trigger wheel welded to the back of the AUX pulley with a ford crank sensor there?

Also people say about a 72-2 one on the cam shaft, but I can't find a trigger wheel of that type?

I'm sure iv read you can use the hall sensor in the dizzy, but fuck knows how that works?

This got me thinking, where is a 6n2 crank sensor? I'm sure it's something to do with the oil seal housing?

Anyone know? Thought I could retrofit one and it be OEM stuff then?

Can't really any more to outer aux pulley as its about 5mm off the chassis leg.

System consists of:

Mega jolt ECU

Runs on wasted spark type ignition.

As I'm taking it off my mates car I'll get:

Ford coil pack + HT Leads

EDIS module (basically ignition amp)

Ford crank sensor

Loom

TPS (although we just used the CBR 600 one, it calibrates fine)

I thought about getting a fixed advanced dizzy (6n one) and attaching the trigger wheel to where the rotor arm goes, then mount the sensor to the dizzy body. This would allow you to adjust the dizzy on the slots so the cut out on the trigger wheel is accurate to the crank sensor.

Not even sure how they're set, I know the cut out isn't always at TDC, sometimes 90 degrees before for example.

Unsure but yeah, any advice welcome!

Yeah the 6n and 6n2 have a crank sensor in the crank oil seal behind the flywheel.

Your AEE should have one already..!?

AEE uses a dizzy though?

behind the flywheel mikey? you sure? i havnt seen such a thing! I have the chain driven oil pump type crank if this helps??

As far as I'm aware the ECU gets its engine position from the hall effect sensor in the distributor and works out where it is from there...

In fact i have a new flywheel end crank seal + housing handy, ill take a look. pretty sure it doesnt have a crank sensor though!

All of my wiring diagrams for the AEE only show the sensor in the distributor but they label it as the crank sensor

It's under the starter motor. It's fixed in by two tiny allen key screws and is about the thickness of a ballpoint pen, so you'll have a hole about 8mm between two maybe M4 threads in the oil seal.

All the 6n's had a dizzy, i've had more 6n engines than 6n2, and in any case the non-dizzy engines have a cam sensor and still have the crank sensor. I've just checked a Golf 1.4 16v engine i've got, that has one as well as a camshaft sensor, too.

on the engine block? i stripped it and rebuilt it and didnt see it, or any electrical connections? or anything on the crank or flywheel which could be used as a trigger wheel?

6n2 have the 60-2 trigger wheel on the crank behind the flywheel, the crank seal housing has a hole in it for the crank sensor to poke through. The 6n doesn't use a crank sensor, as has already been mentioned it uses the hall sender in the dizzy. Guess you could use an AVY crank and crank seal housing to give you oem trigger wheel set up?

I don't think ms can use the hall sender... Omex can tho :wink:

Obviously I wont swap the crank for OEMness lol, just thought it maybe an easier option if it was maybe in the pulley or something!

have contacted the guys who make megajolt/squirt to see what they think!

If your looking to do a 1.6 16v why not just leave you engine as is and start collecting shit for it and run the mappable shit on that?

Haynes call it an engine speed sensor. The only engine i have at the moment is this Golf4 1.4 engine..

The crankshaft is the same as the >98 6n ones (apart from the oil pump drive at the other end). It just has a pressed steel ring pushed onto it for the sensor to read.

The ring and sensors dont come cheap unless you can get second hand ones. Suddenly, i find i have no spares though, as i'm thinking of using this engine for my lawnmower - unlucky!

MS can be setup to use the stock VW hall sender ;)

The first picture shows it most clearly. It goes at 7 o'clock, pretty much.

And the VW's use a 60-2 crank sensor, btw. And new, they're a fortune! Used, not so bad, but can't be sure how long they'll last, and they're a pig to replace. Atleast, mine is a concoction of other VW items, so my fly has to come off to get the sensor out. It's so close to squeezing out, but I think it's because I'm running the wrong sensor. Still works though!

The trigger wheel is a press fit - over the top of the crank, and is a cow to get off. It also creates the seal between the oil seal itself and the crank. You HAVE to use the right one, i know from experience, which resulted in a lot of oil all over my new clutch. Live and learn, eh?

I've toyed with this for a while now, they're not hard to use, I don't have the management to do it though.

The seal is pressed on using a special vw tool, and there's a locking tab that comes from the factory (when you buy a new one), that means it puts the seal on the right way, since the gap has to be at a set place, so you know where top dead is.

Note the little plastic tab, it locks it like 50 degrees BTDC.

You can then use a 6n2 coilpack; or similar.

Really? Get the OEM seal, and sensor and ring, and that's it. You put the ring on x degrees off from BTDC, for your Megajolt, and that's it?

On another note my mates just bought a 6n2 & vagcom seems to think his crank sensors dead haha

It won't run if it's dead! I think it might throw a code is the engine isn't running though..
