Hi all.

I have a mk2 1993 Bready. Since purchasing the car i've had an issue with a knock/clunk when turning the steering wheel left then back to right.

Also when I pull off in low gears I have a similar noise? Not sure myself as i'm not mechanically minded.

So would appreciate any advice. Thanks.

The steering clunk by itself would be fairly normal. Our cars have a self adjusting steering rack which takes up the slack from them wearing. The slack then displays itself as a clunk when you wobble the steering.

Along with pulling away though, I'd be inclined to say it's something in the suspension showing a bit of wear. Possibly the bottom arms which go between the chassis and the suspension struts. The normal place these would wear giving this noise is the ball joints where they go in the bottom of the struts. It's probably worth asking someone in person who's in the know to have a look if they could check these for wear/free play.

I'm not saying catagorically it is these, but if it is, the easiest way to rectify it is to replace the bottom arm with the faulty joint, or ideally both sides. The arms aren't expensive, about £20-30 for a reproduction (or "pattern" as they're more commonly known) part. They're widely available. I wouldn't imagine a garage would charge more than an hour and a half to renew one.

Sounds like a ball joint or CV joint fella.
