so, for my apprenticeship i've got to complete a project. not like the school ones you made when you were 14, like, a resonably difficult project.

it can be (within reason) pretty much anything electrical or mechanical. from robots to remote control cars, to a full central locking install on your car. carputers, that kind of thing.

I have NO idea what to do, i want it to be fun or useful and relatively cheap. I thought of a remote control drift car but you can buy them for a lot cheaper than i could make one.

Also, I'd rather keep my car original than stick a homemade carputer in or similar

So, anyone got any idea's of what to do? Go crazy, it can possibly/probably be done.

i was thinking about trying to find a large die cast model of one and gutting it, then using the shell on a homemade chassis. something like a mk2 polo loon or mk3 polo would be awesome because i could make a replica of my car.

its possible to have gears too, but i kind of wanted it to be rear wheel drive for the pure fun of sliding it round the kitchen

quite a nice idea, may have to take you up on that offer, will let you know! having some impressive wheels for it would really be the finishing touch!

also, weber install could be interesting, but i dont know if it really fits the criteria :p

I have had to do a project each year of my degree, in the first year I made an electric turbo (real electric turbo, not a fan) second year was design a front wing as part of an overall aero package for a formula renault and this year I need to do two projects an individual and a group one, could be a continuation the second year for my individual one but I may look at a DRS/F duct style device for cars with a swan neck wing (DTM) or maybe even an engine based project (maybe improve efficiency through somehow reducing pumping losses) and as for the group project its just we get give something by the lecturers to do so no idea on that one.

Don't be afraid to think outside the box, I got loads of laughs when doing the electric turbo but people weren't laughing when I got a few PSI from it.

for my 2nd year uni project i did an itb and stand alone conversion on my gt, still not finished but i got a good grade lol

There's an ro80 on the bay going for peanuts - needs restoration, nice knowing you put all that effort into restoring the engine and you'll be lucky to get 20k miles out of it..

Yes i have designed a third type, does away with the huge friction and wasted forces of the piston engine, whilst not smashing itself to bits. I even made a model of it to turn by hand, and it successfully drew air into the inlet and blew it out the exhaust, so it works as a pump. I never had the facilities to make a working combustion version though. I believe it would be better than the other two.

Yeah they use a litre every 1000 miles iirc.

Place in Coventry makes replacement tips. Meant to be some of the best in the world. Funnily enough I know who owns it :) I wanna put a rotary in a polo!

NSU were getting engines in on warranty at 14k miles, 20k returns were almost normal, it effectively broke the company.

Yes they can last 60k, probably 100k as someone's pride and joy, but as fleet cars they failed miserably.
