What are your opinions? I'm thinking of tinting my MK3 polo's headlights and not sure whether or not i'll regret it afterwards or not. I guess if I use the spray tint stuff surely I could somehow wash it off afterwards if I wasn't too keen.

spray the outside of the lights? usually looks shite. split them and paint the non reflective bits black. much more oem looking.

Not sure about the spray tint but of you go for laminex you could peel it off with a little bit of heat.

My old MK3 came with spray tinted headlights. I wouldnt have done it, as its pretty crap, but it looked mean from a distance. It was the first thing to come off that car though, as i started working shifts, and going to work early, or coming back late. First time i drove it in the dark i couldnt see alot, and had 2 yellowish spots on the road. Had to drive with high beams on and almost no-one flashed me. The tint was scraped off before work the next day. So yeah, bad idea, and also now an MOT fail.

Yeah man was thinking that, because that sits behind the bulbs and wouldn't effect the brightnes of the lights would it?

That lamin-x stuff was an option too, but wasn't sure if it would really kill my beam a shit load so I couldn't see haha. I guess it just depends how dark I'd go, right?

What do you mean when you say 'depo your headlamps' man?

Doesnt effect the brightness, and is MOT legal. You just have to take the light out of its plastic mounts and put it in the oven to melt the sealent holding the lense on. Theres a guide on here IIRC.

Cheers for the first hand experience man haha I just wasn't too sure how to get the tinted look without actually covering the headlamp lense too dark and reducing visibilty.

Yeah just don't go too dark if you do, depo'ed is pretty much as the other guy said. Take the lenses off your headlamps and paint the non reflective parts black (so no light output is affected)

Ahh wicked! yeah that seem easily enough and it still gives that slightly tinted look without being too over the top and i'm sure i've got some black spray knocking about as well :) think that will be my mission tomorrow Cheers for the help and advise mate (Y)

is legal , to prove it I've had it on for a few months now and it passed its mot just last month, no problems

not many people tint the lights on mk2f's for some reason, i think its down to people wanting it to look oem and clean too much, i have no such problems

and i know how to :) I've asked the owner, I've already got uprated bulbs fitted but i guess i'll find out if they are bright enough once i try! might even get a 2nd pair of lights and indicators in case

its not a fail from what i understand from those regs

possible reasons for failing with tint on:

"inoperative or 50% of the light source illuminating"

you must have tinted your headlights silly amounts to reduce the light by 50%

"NOT VISIBLE FROM A REASONABLE DISTANCE DUE TO EXCESSIVE DAMAGE, DETERIATION OR HAVING PRODUCTS ON THE LENS OR LIGHT SOURCE"

this doesnt mean having products on your lens makes it fail, its means having products on the lens which makes the light produced not visible from a reasonable distance, in other words dont tint your lights too much e.g. using gloss black paint

but if you do tint id recommend uprating the bulbs to be on the safe side, i have some osram nightbreakers and better sidelights fitted and I'm pretty damn sure id pass an mot with my dark lamin-x on and i dont expect to get pulled by the police either

why aren't coppers pulling me for having tinted lights then that are a definate no brainer fail of an mot then, o wait....

it came in on the first of jan this year about it. i dont need to prove anything to you, as i dont really care

me neither car looks cool and it passed it test in september this year so meh its staying, if not darker

Your looks really nice dude, I dont think you should go darker personally but thats just me. Dubbin is all about each to there own aint it and making things to there own taste. I personally think you should embrace and not hate haha, but i aint a hater :) if i see something i really dont like, i just wouldn't say anying instead of hatin lol. cheers for the reply tho man.

Yeah i went for black, got the 45cm x 150cm size, it did all my front, rear and side repeaters with some to spare, took me about half an hour to do the lot too.

Not due for an M.O.T yet but it will pass, nothing illegal about these.

Cool. Yeah after I posted this comment about them passing the MOT I noticed on the site that their was info about them being fully legal so... I'm not worried about getting the darker shade now its well cheap too tbf. I have a mk3 polo or mk2f whatever you wanna call it, so i think i could get away with the 30cm x 100cm as i'm not doing my rears, but i'll get my ruler out just just to be sure. Just need some clear indicators.

Goto your local sign writing place and ask them for some black perforated vinyl. I've seen many cars with this on looks good does the job you want it to and I've not heard any problems with mot.
