Hi all, new here and in desperate need of advice regarding where rain could be coming in and soaking my sons vw polo tdi 53 plate, I have tried to find the leak but can't , it's soaking drivers footwell and rear footwell on drivers side, changed the rear light cluster gaskets/seals but car still getting wet, done pollen filter but no luck finding problem, what else could it be? No holes in floor. At a loss and end of my wits so thought I would ask here , any advice apart from scrap it would be helpful, thank you all in advance.

Hello,

Open the bonnet and make sure there aren't leave and clutter blocking up the drain holes between the windscreen wipers and the bulk head. Where there's various bits of plastic trim.

My freind's Leon's passenger footwell was filling up because of this, it could be tracing through the carpet to the rear.

no sunroof on it, will try the door seal but how will i know if its that< been in car when its raining but cant see where ot gets in , passed mot yesterday so no holes in floor, if i managed to get carpet up (underlay and carpet soaked through) would i probably see then where it comes in??

has he had a sub fitted? if so has he ran the power wire up through the bulkhead through any grommits....

?? if yes make sure the grommits are closed over with some sealant.

Think I may have found it now.I am sure it's the inner door seal behind the drivers door panel.not sure how to get it off so may be a garage job for me, thanks for all suggestions you gave, will let forum know if that's the problem so others like me who don't have much knowledge about cars look at that and it may help them if they get the same problem. sorry guys that was not the problem, i will just have to search high and low on this one as the car is in to good nick to get rid of, i will let you know if i find where the leak is coming from, but again would appreciate more ideas.

get some one the spray the car with water from a hose while you look inside of leaks :)

I have the same problem... It isn't the door seals, it doesn't seem to be the sunroof, and it definitely happens due to rain. I've checked the rear light connections and no water is getting in there. I believe it is the windscreen run-off failing to drain. Having Googled this I have just found a post about this happening on a Toureg - it seems to be similar.

"So here's the deal. These vehicles, like many others have a reservoir above the firewall just beneath the plastic cover at the base of the windshield, which also houses the wiper motor, etc. typically the reservoir collects any water running from the windshield or rain in general. There are two drains one at the drivers side and one at the passenger side. These drains usually work great except when they become plugged with silt, debris from trees shedding leaves, insect matter etc. When this happens, the water simply collects and fills the reservoir with nowhere to go except into the fresh air intake for the cabin heating/cooling system located just above the passenger side glove compartment.

The water then leaks into the venting ducts and onto the floor. It also stays in the reservoir and sloshes back and forth while driving.

Any mechanic worth his salt should be able to figure this out and charge you ½ hr labor to remove the plastic shroud and unplug the drains. That's pretty much the extent of it. I did it myself and it took about 20 minutes.

The wipers have to be removed. There is a release clip at the bottom of the wiper coupling where it meets the drive shaft. Pull it back and lift the wiper straight up and off the shaft. Remove the plastic pins ( they look like slotted screws) along the top of the shroud by turning them 90 degrees and pulling them straight out with some needle nose pliers. Open the hood and remove the rubber seal strip along the edge of the shroud. Find the little plastic holding pins and reach around to the bottom of each pin. You need to compress the little barbs on both sides of the pin to allow it to be pushed up through the hole. There are also 4 plastic push-lock pins holding the bottom edge of the shroud. You will have to pull up on the center (looks like a screw) of each pin and pull it almost all the way out. Then remove the whole pin assembly. A small sharp pair of end cutters works great. Now with a little bit of twisting and careful manipulation you should be able to pull the plastic piece up and out of the way. Start at the corners and pull the piece down and out from under the windshield trim. Then lift it up carefully and move it to rest on the windshield being careful not to disconnect any rubber hoses from the washer nozzles.

The drains are located at the far edge of the trough in each corner. Use a straightened coat hanger or something similar to poke and clear the drain. Get your garden hose and with a good straight stream of water flush out each drain hole and make sure it is draining. Water will pour out of the rear of each wheel well just under the front of each door.

Try using a spray of Lysol or other household disinfectant into the trough since it may have had stagnant water for some time. This will kill any bacteria that may have found it a haven for while and ensure that you will not be blowing it into the passenger compartment every time you turn on your blower.

Put it all back together and enjoy!!!"

i have the same problem,

i thought it was the scuttle tray or door seal but turns out its the window seal,

water is hitting the seal at the top of the window and running down it and going behing the wing mirror inside the door

then it is flowing out into the footwells.

check your seals still have a strong grip on the door

also look for something like thison all doors, if not it could be something else

thanks all, going to try everything ( if i have not done so already) what you guys tell me as i am not that knowledgable about cars, but i can honestly say i am really fed up with it, cant find the leak and spend most of my time drying the carpet with a hairdrier, i was thinking of taking up one side of the carpet and folding it to the side to try and see where the leak comes from but i dont know how to get the carpet up without ruining it.

still not found this leak and i am ready for the nuthouse, tried everything, thought i sorted it when i found that the rain diverter was not fitted on properly after getting the drains unblocked, i think the only other thing i can do is change the screen and see if that is it, i have found where it comes into the car, and thats a the bonnet opening catch at the side of the drivers door as the corner starts to get wet and then spreads over the carpet, but cant find where it comes in from the outside, if you know what i am trying to say, if god is a member of this forum please contact me with the answer

Jimmymac.. did you get sorted in the end? (Hate to think of you still pulling your hair out a year later!)

We had a similar issue - opened car doors after heavy downpour - to find 3 inches of water in all foot wells!

My mechanic wanted a lot of money (mostly labour costs) to sort it out. I used my nouse and poked around with a kebab stick in those bulk heads. Sure enough - water came gushing out - and debris with it. May try to get a friend to power wash a bit in there if he can, but for now - we hope the problem is solved. (Will find out when it rains again!)

PS - wish they were easier to get at. But there you go. (Easy enough with thin stick - or the coat hanger method tho...

Hi x-Luke-b-x when you say the window seal it would be the outer window seal that would be the problem wouldn't it???

If so any ideas where you can buy them from or would it be okay to get one off another car at a breakers?

Please anyone help me it's driving me nuts having the windows misting up all the time.

ive had a leak on my polo 9n gt tdi for a while now (in front passager footwell ) i know where its getting in just a really tight spot to fix! any how the rainwater in running under the battery tray and heading to a grommet right next to the 

abs pump at back bottom of engine bay i found it by running a hose over that location hope this might help some of you
