Mk2 polo c saloon GT

Featured Replies

For a variety of reasons, I've bought another mk2 saloon. On the whole it's quite a good one! Though some of my comments would suggest otherwise I'm merely nit-picking. I think the biggest problem is the fact that it's tornado red!

Model: 1990 polo c

Engine: 1.3 GT conversion. GT box. Terribly loud exhaust. Looks like a jetex backbox with homemade hangers. I've got a standard mk3 saloon system to go on it.

Suspension:Old rusty springs. no idea what they are. Bilstein shocks on the back and maybe even on the front. GT rear axle is nice touch. I'm putting eibach springs on it, it's too low at the front and even lower at the back. (although my other saloon is lower)

Brakes: VWII calipers, 239mm vented discs, Braided hoses are being fitted soon as the front flexis have cracks in them.

Wheels and Tyres: TSW hockenheims when purchased but will be running G60 steels with 175/50/15 tyres or GT steels with the usual stuff on them.

Exterior Styling: Standard for the most part. Few small tweaks. :ninja:

Interior Styling: Scirocco GT2 front seats. I was going to fit the rears too but The 'rocco base is too wide and he back doesn't sit right against the rear shelf. So it can stay mismatched for now. Coupe S detailing (Wheel, clocks, clock surround) mk1 golf gauges.

ICE: mk3 golf sony/volkswagen radio cassette. The car came with some free speaker holes in the parcel shelf so I duly fitted some 6.5" speakers in them. Just need to sort a decent front one out.

Security: It needs some

Comments: I was originally going to buy this car around 9 months ago but funds didn't stretch to the asking price. 8 months later it came up again with a few faults so I took a punt. It's needed a dizzy and a wiring loom and the engine still won't idle when cold (suspect it's the throttlebody gasket) but at least its running and it doesn't sound like it's about to blow up. :)

It needed a battery tray but seems pretty solid underneath. It's currently being transformed into how I want it and I'm hoping to be finished by the end of the month.

Future Plans: I've another GT engine that came with some sort of fancy cam. It'd be a shame not to try it out. :unibrow: Longer 5th gear or 8p box as most of my commute is on the motorway.

Pics I've mostly whored off the ad but I will add more once I've finished.

You'll be pleased to hear I have some spacers for it! :)

Exhaust is for sale if anyone wants it ;)

This pic might give you some idea of why I think the stance is wrong

i was tempted by this a while back too but just couldn't justify it, it was up when mk2 loon prices seemed to spike but this one struggled for ages even tho it looked better than a lot of the slammed ratty turds that were selling for more :?

at least its getting some love now 8-)

Came from near my way not long ago, nice to see that it's in good hands.

Was it? How long ago was that? The car was registered in cumbria which is where it was for sale in jan.

I believe it was for sale in Carlisle for a long while at £1300-ish, I tried getting a friend to buy it.

O rly? Perhaps it had another iterim owner? I paid 500 but it probably owes me about 750 with all the bits I've bought for it already! I'll get a bit back selling the wheels though.

Its clear that I suck at build threads. 'cos after 4 weeks and zero updates on here, the car's almost finished. So far I've replaced a lot of stuff, mainly preventative maintenance.

Fitted a schrick 268 cam that I got from a GT I'm breaking, the keyway that the mk3 engines use had a bit of a chip in it so I've had to time it up using the mk4 keyway. While I had stuff off I changed the cambelt and water pump. I also put a GT thermostat housing on as it had an SPI one and a new expansion tank as the old one was cracked and there was lots of evidence that it had been leaking (although this could have been the 'black' rad top cap which I believe was a recall item) I managed to get a 525mm copper cored magnetti marelli radiator for £30 off ebay which should keep it nice and cool, the original was looking a bit tired and a section of fins broke away when I removed it from the car.

I took the inlet off to find that all the bolts along the top were loose and all the bolts on the bottom were silly tight, which made me think that was the cause of the poor idle. After replacing the gasket and doing the bolts up properly there was no difference.

Schneil came round and hooked the car up to VWtool (diagnostic software like vag-com) the original GT converter was thoughtful enough to wire in the diagnostic connectors correctly. It threw up a few faults:

523-- ------- Intake air temp sensor (G42)

No Signal

522-- ------- Engine coolant Temp sender (G62)

Open or Short to B+

552-- ------- Volume Air Flow Sensor Position Sensor -G19

No Signal

537-- ------- Oxygen sensor regulation

Short to B+

525-- ------- Oxygen sensor (G39)

No Signal

I figured it was a dead lambda probe and I literally had the spanner on the probe ready to undo it 'til I thought about the lambda signal and how it's ignored when the engine is cold, so unplugging it should make it a least run better. Unplugged it and no difference, so I moved on to the air flow meter.

It took some head scratching but I finally figured out the problem. Two of the four wires going into the afm had somehow snapped inside the rubber shroud on the back of the plug. So I had to put fresh wires in from a donor loom and problem solved!

That's pretty much it on the engine side of things. The GT box now has an 8P 5th. I haven't gotten round to changing the exhaust yet so hopefully it will be bearable on the motorway at the lower revs an 8P 5th brings to the table. The standard system I'll be using on my other saloon to get it through its' MOT before I take it to longlife to have it's old system modified to accept the 4-branch I got for it. Then this car can have it.

I got some eibach springs for it, they should go well with the bilstein dampers.

Also got some bits for the TCAs, new dust seals and polyurethane outer bushes.

Got these MLR braided hoses. Calipers looked ok apart from worn slider boots so changed those while I was there.

Rear axle bushes were cracked so I bought some new ones from lupoboz on here. Didn't go for polyurethane ones as I'm not sure they are needed, not on a near stock gt anyway. I only got the poly TCA bushes cos I figured they'd be easier to fit.

So now all I've left to do is put the suspension back together and bleed the brakes. I have until tomorrow night to finish it if I want it ready by the morning of the 1st. I think I might book the day off.

Pics will follow when my new camera arrives

want to swap/sell the rocco seats ;) ..

I've got light grey gt seats but just need a wetvac.. :) Cash you are way poss too :) ?

  • Author

I would only swap for corrado seats sorry they are the only things I fit in properly, the scirocco seats are a good alternative but they are a bit too wide. I would glady swap them for some corrado seats in a similar condition

Familiar car, it was someone on here. I got my comet blue S from someone in Carlisle..

It's been owned by a couple of users on here.

Another nice loon gaz! I've only had a quick look at this thread on my phone just now at work, but looks tidy! I remember seeing it a while back, was thinkin bout buying it but struggle for space at home!

  • Author

That's my problem I've got too much space and I'm slowly but surely finding cars to fill it. Got 4 cars at home but got room for at least 2 more.

You all had me looking to see how many times it's been for sale. There was the time I bought it and the time I last saw it.

When I got it:

http://www.clubpolo.co.uk/forum/index.php?...mp;hl=gt+saloon

When I first saw it, it was for sale for about 6 months looking at the thread dates:

http://www.clubpolo.co.uk/forum/index.php?...aloon&st=25 - Looks like headgasket had just been done which I hadn't appreciated. I wondered why the alternator was covered in oil but the headgasket was bone dry. Also noticed there is a GT badge in the pics but that's disappeared somewhere.

It was also for sale in 2008 (same owner)

http://www.clubpolo.co.uk/forum/index.php?...5&hl=saloon - I now know why the grille has been cut!

So it's had two owners previous on here since about 2006/7

I have just found a couple of photos of this Polo from when i owned it.

Really could see where i was going then!!!

04052010107.jpg

04052010106.jpg

This was from when i was flogging it around the Cumbrian country lanes competing in road rallies with it. Did pretty well as well for a 1300.

Another one from when i had them all in one place, as well as my Mini

DSC00029.jpg

I owned it for at least 6 years i reckon, i got it off my next door neighbour for the princely sum of £200 when i got it.

I fitted the engine etc in it straight away, transplanted it all from my Coupe S.

I see you've replaced the water pump, i fitted one only a couple of months before i sold it.

I was having trouble with it boiling so i tried everything possible to cure it and it ended up being the head gasket, wasn't giving any signs of it being the head gasket though, thats why everything else was tried first.

The dampers are Bilsteins in the front as well.

  • Author

yeah I've put some eibach springs on now and I've changed the front struts so had to get the dampers out. One of the struts had a hole in it going into the cartridge housing that'd been covered over with some sealant. :/

The water pump was very corroded when I removed it, otherwise I might have re-used it.

The expansion tank had a crack in it, and the cap might have been leaking as the original black caps are prone to issues.

It had a new cap on the expansion tank as well, that was one of the first things I tried.

gaz them wheels are horrid, what are they ??

TSW hockenheims. I've sold them now. I've got some coupe S hockenheims for the winter. Was going to upload a pic of them but I've been too busy.

I'm nearly there with it, just got to re-build the brakes which I'm hoping to do this week.

o good good, i bought some of them same wheels didnt i ? powder coating them after xmas cream. My eyes are still stinging from that picture of the wheels haha. cant wait to get my loon early next year, theres one 65 miles away on ebay too ...... and the one yeti is selling would be ideal .

Those spot lights are maaaad. Love 'em.

They're function over form and then some! The car still had all the relays in for them.

Progress!

Car is being taxed on Saturday when I might finally take some pictures.

I've had to swap the fuel tank and replace all the brake lines which has held me up by about a week, which means I haven't had time to sort out the exhaust. So it's still on there and may be for a while.

Tonight Matthew I will be finishing everything off, gotta fit the front handbrake cable and refit the fuel pump housing, rehang the exhaust and put the wheels on and that's about it til I get a new downpipe or a 4-branch for it so I can change the exhaust. I will need to sort some new hangers out on the car for the standard backbox I've got for it as the ones on the car are buggered.

I've fitted a towbar and it hasn't totally ruined it.

Good progress bud, do you mean new custom exhaust hangers on the bottom of the car ? Get some pics of then too :-)

  • Author

No I need to replace one of the existing ones at the back as it's lost all its strength. There is an extra one through the boot floor that is helping but it could do with a second one on the other side as the backbox doesn't sit very level

All the major stuff is finished and it's being taxed tomorrow! :-D
