Insurance gains £1000, WHY?!

Featured Replies

Okay, iv only been passed 6 months but I'm 19 and I had 2 named drivers on my policy. Last week I was getting some excellent quotes of £600-£750, I was over the moon! So I kept re checking it to try and get it lower and check the price on my birthday, then suddenly.. £1750! :o

Iv rang elephant (cheapest everytime), gave them my reference number and they said the cheapest they could do was £1700, iv shopped around a bit more, comparison websites etc and still, no lower than £1500!

Is there any reason at all why my insurance can rise by £1000 over the period of a week? I have changed the quote but everytime i have changed it back to what it started with and still I'm not getting any decent quotes any more!

Any help would be appreciated! Also, does anybody know any cheaper options? I can't go on my dads policy yet as he is a dealer and has a trade licence.

Thanks :)

That seems very odd. The quotes you are getting now are actually much more like what you should expect to pay, and for your limited experience they are quite reasonable, believe it or not. I dont know how you managed to get the £700 ones, as i have been driving 4 years, with no claims and mine is still around £500-£600.

Named drivers mate. I really cant afford £1500, need a motorbike. :(

My quotes have jumped up by around a grand too, not sure why it has tbh.

Who is your policy with mate? :/

I was getting cheapest quote with Tesco

Does seem it is happening frequently though

I might be wrong, but if you keep making requests for quotes and changing details in an attempt to get a lower quote, the system might be flagging you up as a bad risk due to the number of changes your making???

Adrian flux, they have always been cheapest on my modified cars both the 407 and the polo.

I think that's bullshit, they would have done something ages ago. I'm constantly doing quotes. Iv got two accounts too and it has happened with both of them.

possible but i doubt it, because i haven't got any quotes in the last 6 months.

another possibility: weather, has a bad winter been forecast? after the snow a couple of years back insurers had to pay loads of claims, so they will be trying to keep themselves profitable even when they are going to be paying out a fortune in claims??

My exact thought mate, damn why is my birthday so near winter :(

Its a long shot, but a possibility. In the last week or so there was a ruling to make insurance prices equal between male and female drivers. The deadline for this to have happened by is the 21st December, so you might see insurers playing about with their prices across the board in order to comply with the new rules.

I did hear about this, if it is I'm so annoyed

This is nothing out of the ordinary sadly. It is actually apart of how insurance company put together their prices, found this out 6 months after i had passed my test trying to figure out why my insurance increased. I did alot of research to find the truth.

Basically for the first 6 months after passing your driving test, this goes for everyone, Insurance company says statically you are at your least to have an accident due to the lack of confidence, however after 6 months of being on the road your confidence increases and so does the risk.

Therefore after 6 months from the moment you pass your test, BAM! your insurance will sky rocket. You can test the theory by doing quotes stating your licence is less than 6 months.

Very sad that i listened to people who said "wait a year or so and your insurance will go down" bullshit! your best deal for the first 2 years will be within the first 4 months of passing, and also passplus within the 6 months make a huge difference too, not much after and barely anything after 2 years, infact some insurance company don't even value passplus after 2 years.

PS: Adding female drivers wont lower it as much either, you will find this being more and more common amongst insurance company, 2012 december is the deadline for all insurance company in europe to give male and female equal insurance, a european court ruling has passed on gender discrimination towards men

There is really no point in trying to analyse insurance quotes or try forever and a day to get them down online.

Insurance companies pull prices out of thin air and prices change from one day to the next.

The best thing to do, stay clear of the big companies like admiral (which incorporate elephant, diamond etc) even though they may be the cheapest on the comparison sites. Take the three lowest quotes from the smaller companies, like sky or adrian flux, and battle prices between them. Do this over the phone though, most of these companies offer a phone back service too so it won't even cost you.

For your age and experience you may well find one of the admiral group companies to be the cheapest no matter what you do....but I would steer clear if you are on a tight budget.

They are still chasing me for £200 for a policy I cancelled a year ago. I cancelled just after I made a monthly payment (which is a payment made in advance) and they still tried to charge me a cancellation fee. The reason I wanted to cancel you may ask...the policy stated out at £50 a month for a BMW on a multicar policy, I added a second car 2 months into the policy and obviously the price went up. Another couple of months went by and I wanted to take the second car off the policy and just have the BMW. The new price...£94 a month. I'd just paid then £120 for two cars so I though just cancel it and go elsewhere. So they wanted £200 to do so.

Moral of the story I'm trying to get across, all insurance companies are rip offs but they are the worst by far.

It's all just a big fuck on, really annoys me, iv tried everything.

if its less than a month ago then your original quote will probably still be valid... find the email (or quote if logged on money supermarket etc system) and see if it still is.

It happened with me (only by £200) when i was reinsuring my golf.. when it changed from july to august... new quotes were just much dearer. So i went back to an email from the quotes in late july - it said they were valid for a month so just bought from that.
