MK2 1043cc on Weber 32/34 dmtl

Featured Replies

just bought a weber 32/34 dmtl with inlet manifold of an (ex)hot 1.3 mk2 for a decent price

gonna put it on my 1043, along with a gt cam and exhaust. will this be ok or is the carb too big?

Anyone else running a dmtl on a 1 ltr?

cheers

Give it a go. When modding my old pierburg carb on my old 1043cc bready using a pierburg from a nova 1.2 I did try just wacking on the hole carb exactly as it came off the nova. The results wern't good, it didnt run properly at all. Seemed like the venturi was too big and the main jet wasnt really working until about 5-6000 rpm.

As for engine mods, as much as having a lairy 1 litre is so much fun and I dont wanna be the guy to say it but you may aswell drop a bigger lump in there for the amount of hassle.

The normal upgrade carb for a 1043cc (and fitted as standard on some of them) is a Weber TLA (single venturi, autochoke), I can't remember off the top of my head if it's a 32 or 34mm venturi.

lol too many people saying drop a bigger engine in. but for me its not just about having power. I wanna tune my engine, simply because I want to have a go. I could buy a bigger engine an tune that, but obviously it would cost more, and also I'm 1 with no ncb so insurance is an issue.

the direct replacement is indeeed a 32tla, but a)try finding a second hand one, and b)thats too easy :)

anyone done the conversion on a 1ltr?

21*. A 1 year old really would be silly insurance

Personally, i wouldn't bother with the 32tla, it ain't a weber, not really.

There's Weber's, and there's Weber's.

Production ones thrown on to factory spec cars, then there's after-market performance orientated stuff,

Yeah, the 32TLA, 28/32 DMTR and 32/34 DMTL will give results over such things as pierburg's, but they're not great for tuning,

One of the reasons being they're stuck with a fixed sized choke, so tuning them to different engine capacities/peak airflow isn't possible,

another being they utilize flap type chokes with restrict airflow quite badly (yeah, not the worst thing in the world), the DMTL's can be found on lazy old land rovers etc.

If i was you, i'd sell the DMTL on, and get hold of something like a DCD, i've just fitted one onto a 2G engine (1.3 late hydraulic head) and its worlds better, it replaced a DMTL by the way. It uses a very small first choke/throttle, and then a considerably bigger throttle, with only a slightly bigger venturi, this is down to it being on a 1.3, and i'm trying to keep it responsive on the second choke.

I'm getting circa 120 miles to 14 liters of fuel, so around 37-40mpg, that's not driving it carefully, and that pulling the heavy shell of a jetta.

Exactly what I was thinking when playing with my old 1l mk2, the standard weber definitly isnt a performance upgrade. I did a fair few little things to mine, straight through centre section with a straight bit of pipe cut to length=done!, ported inlet manifold(matched the port size to the gasket size, removed casting marks/smoothed as far as i could inside the runners, removed the spikes/sanded flat the manifold pre heater and enlarged the hole in the rubber carb flange). The carb itself was the pierburg 1b with nova 1.2 jets, manual idle speed screw, manual choke, knife edged polished chokes, removed casting marks inside venturi/polished. Also removed the warm air valve from the airbox to aid airflow.

It thrashed the standard 1l mk2 bready 'van' factory fitted with weber 32tla.

Where can I get a DCD then, and how much do they normally fetch? How easily does it fit to the VW's, got any pics of your set up?

No pics yet, still waiting to get a phone that's capeable

Get one from ebay. Get a rebuild kit and sort it out, make an adapter plate to fit to standard manifold.

lol no worries, imo phones are far to complex if you can do anything except call, text, and play snake on them.

any particular size dcd i should be looking for?

28/36 IIRC

legend. I'll give the dmtl a clean and put it up for sale then

Dont get me wrong, i used a DMTL before on my polo coupe and it wasn't bad, the second venturi was too big though,

With the DCD you can buy, or machine different venturi's so it can be fine tuned to the engine.

yeah on 1.3? so on a 1litre it will def be to big!

Do you get different venturi from webcon?

They might do them yeah, i made my own!

Ah i bet you have lots of interesting and useful machining toold handy right?

just bought a weber 32/34 dmtl with inlet manifold

is the carb too big?

Probably. It will have twin 24/25 chokes (small numbers in a an oval on side of carb). This moves the power band higher up the revs.

Weber guru John Passini talks about using a 23/25 choked Weber DCD on an 850cc Mini with a well heated inlet manifold, but does not reveal the jetting.

However 998cc Hillman Imps with 28/36 DCD do have prior art

http://www.imps4ever.info/tech/carbs.html

For standard cam 998cc imp it looks like 22/23 chokes

and

______ idle/main/emulsion/air

Primary 40/115/F23/230

Secondary 50/130/F23/200

and a 50 pump jet is a good starting point.
