Hello all, I have a 2003 1.4 9n which was at VW for it's service and for various problems, after they quoted me €2500 the decision had to be made to sell the car or repair it myself, I decided to keep it and have got fairly well down the list with the service items done (oil,, filters e.t.c) i've done the heater flap vents, rear brakes, cam belt/water pump, anti roll bar (a couple of collars to stop it wandering!!) and now i've come to the intermittent wiper problem. I left this for VW as after googling there were many conflicting results with some saying the intermittent is run off the computer and some off a relay, VW said the indercator/washer switch which hugs the steering wheel was shot so i replaced this with a second hand one but to no effect so the question is does the 9n (2003) have a relay and if so can anybody out there please help me identify it or what is the process of putting this right? any help would be much appreciated as I am pulling what's left of my hair out here!,

The intermittent wipers are controlled by a relay inside the onboard supply control unit (Body computer) it's probably not replaceable?? here's the wiring diagram

ah yes i found that box and opened it!! does not sound good then? maybe i'll take it to VW again and see what they can do.

You could probably pick up a unit from a breakers but it would then need to be re-coded to your car with a full working copy of Vagcom/VCDS

If you don't mind it being none-standard, you could 're-plumb' the wipers, using a 6N wiper relay to do the same job.

The switch contacts are totally different so you'd need to cobble a 6n wiper switch onto the column and you'd also loose the variable intermittant timer

The VW list price for the unit is 271 €uros It should'nt take more than one hour to program it, but if you can find someone locally with a full working copy of vagcom you could do it yourself

I don't know if this is relevant or not, but I did discover this week that when the bonnet isn't closed properly, the intermittent wipers stopped working. Not the normal speed settings or the press down, one wipe, just intermittent.

Must be a safety thing.

I thought that the wipers were broken, hence finding this thread, but then walking back to my car in the daylight I noticed it wasn't quite closed. There were no other dash lights telling me it was open or anything. But I closed the bonnet and tried again and they were fine.

Faulty bonnet closed sensor in your case?
