Post some pictures of wheels that you think would work in todays aftermarket. The guys on RetroRides started posting loads of designs they think would look good and/or sell.

Not gonna say that any of these will be followed through at all, but will be a laugh never the less.

Retro or modern, small or large (or small to be made large and visa versa) All ideas welcome. Try to steer away from stuff thats been done a million times.

I'd love to see some replicas of OEM VW wheels. Castellets, teardrops etc. But with a bit of dish, in the original diameters, and also larger. I'd love some tear drops with a little dish :-D

Agreed. Kind of like the concept P, but they look wank.

Must say though, bit of a blag making people do your design for no pay. You've just had us name a wheel for no reward. Now you want design, hmmmm

Individual designs are trivial, there's a bigger picture to address first. Many modern cars have a fundamental style similarity - random edges and attempts here and there, but generally smooth, curvy and streamlined. Although streamlining seems to be a little passe, replaced with bulbous hups and curves i can't get my head around (like the big Peugeot that looks like the automotive equivalent to Stallone's mum when she's been on the steroids, and the Nissan Juke? I mean just WTF is that supposed to be?).

My point is that a wheel needs to work with the design of the vehicle, so you need to work with the design of modern cars if you wanna sell wheels.

This doesn't necessarily mean you have to make fugly, extremely styled wheels. You need to create a vision for people, and you have less boundaries than ever. When Pirelli introduces a 175/50-13 tyre in the '80s it opened the floodgates for minis, suddenly the 7x13 superlight was born, along with a popular lattice style.

But this is what people wanted..

Today you have the tyres so you can be more adventurous, and see what they could've done had they had the choice. But that doesn't even mean extremes, because we can do huge elastic bands or keyring size tyres. It's the style you need the vision for.

It affects different vehicles in different ways. If a car's arches are a bit out of proportion, the thickness of the rim can make a huge difference. So for a split rim effect, on say a MK2 Golf, you have the option of having a wheel centre which is big, like from a 16in wheel, then having a skinny polished rim and elastic band wheel. Or, you could have a tiny wheel centre, derived from a 13in design, and then put huge round mirrors on it to take it up to take a 16in tyre.

Take a four spoke mock splitty, for example..

And splitty or not, there's a big difference between taking a spoke to the outer rim or tucking it - so the individual style really comes later, first you're looking at the whole theme, which field you're gonna start in, what sort of vehicle you're aiming at, bearing in mind endless factors.

I think you should be inventive, don't take this harshly but the two wheels i've seen so far just look like last seasons replicas. The minilite, ATS classic, BBS split wires, they didn't become a household shape by someone playing it safe on a friday afternoon between fag breaks. I think you need to look at what people are buying wheels for, then come up with something original they're gonna want.

Not easy! But some things just work. Simple things. I don't have many pics of wheels, i'm not too bothered myself, i suppose these below just work in their application in each case. I know some are steel but that's not to say they don't work as alloy - the original 60's mini Cooper 10in 10-hole steel is now available made of alloy, and you can still pop the original stainless centre cap on it. So there's no reason why you can't make an existing classic steel wheel, just in classic alloy..

There's no limit and it doesn't mean being extreme. Although the Antera three spoke of the early 90's, then the TSW Venom a couple of years later, were bold and had the desirable effect for the manufacturer of the time.

So yeah, with thousands of random designs nobody cares about already available, i think you need to think outside the box and create something truly new that will snow everything else.

In contrast however, here are a few established wheels i like or think might help, which are - or could be - made of alloy..

Got to be honest, judging from some of the posts above, teardrops with dish, scalas with dish etc has anyone looked at the 1552 catalogue, they pretty much have done most of the examples mentioned above, also remade the p-slots with dish as well as a few other retro classics.

Agree with what most people have said already, 14 inch versions of things would be ideal, quite like how the polo sits on 14's but can't seem to find anything that's decent! Either too rare or expensive!

I had no idea that 1552 made anything other than the snowflakes. Never looked at the catalogue, simply because i cant afford anything from it However i really would like a set of their 14" split rim, dished tear drops. I wonder what they cost, being made to order and all. I'd rather them not be splits, and not be so expensive.
