How the chuff do you change the bulbs?

From what I remember, with difficulty, if you take the smaller of the two rubber covers off and reach in, to the side of the main beams they either pull out or twist round then come out (I can't remember which), it requires a master contortionist with tiny hands to do it with the headlight unit still in situ (but it is possible, as I've done it!)

I've got a 2004 model and just tryed it and they are a pain. Feeling the bumper might have to come off same as the golfs. :/

According to the manual there is no requirement to remove the bumper on any model, on a few engine variants you need to remove the battery

As above you done have to remove the bumper. Have a look through the main beam lens and find the bulb then fel around the back in the same area and you will find it, twist it a few times before pulling as the plastic guess to the reflector body and needs persuading. If your fingers can't get in their then use some needle nose pliers.

Renewing left side light bulb -M1- or right -M3-

– Remove cover on back of headlight unit housing.

– Pull holder -arrow- with bulb on connector out of reflector.

– After replacing bulb, push holder with bulb into reflector to stop.

– Install cover on back of headlight unit housing.

– Always check function of headlight after installing a bulb.

Wow! It's defo not that easy aha! I have big gangly fingures and struggle same with plyers they are too big. Can't seam to think why it doesn't come out. I'm gonna have another go tomorrow. Thanks for the help. The only reason why I was gonna remove the bumper was to remote the headlight making it easy as the bumpers only a few bolts.

There is an EU directive that states bulbs must be replaceable without major dismantling of the car!!

I remember watching a consumer program a few years ago when they tried to replace a headlight bulb on a renault clio or megane it took an AA guy 2 1/2 hrs he had to remove the wheel and the arch liner then the access was through a panel that was too small for anyone but a child to get their hand into

I remeber that but our cars at work are the same. It's just probs going to be quicker to pull the lamp off and do it but, might have another go in situe

That's French cars for you. 2 1/2 hrs to change a bulb.

Try again, I'm sure it will come out, but I'd not then it will defo be easier to change them with the lights off. That is if you know how to get the bumper off, on my 9n3 it took me almost all day to get it off and on again and what seemed like 100 screws. Lol

Ahaha, Was going to try but true British weather gets in the way again. Will give it a shot again, thinner plyres are the way i think. if not then the bumper on a 9n are held on by a few torque bit screws. in the wheel arch, under the front grill, behind the lower grills (which are rusted in :( ) just need the right tools from work and it will be off. Hopefully ahah.

damn I've just got a full set of new bulbs and was hoping to change them this weekend with ease.... looks like I'm going to have to get a garage to do them for me .

I would say give it a try first as it may be simple in your case as different engines etc mean more or less room behind the lights. Iirc the headlight bulbs twist off anticlockwise. This confuses a lot of people and keeps the garages busy.
