6n strut tops on mk3

Featured Replies

Noticed some people use the strut top caps off 6n's on mk3's, just wondering what the advantages are?

Stops them knocking

I just thought it was for looks?

It's all about the Punto caps, i tried them because they allow room for a spanner so changing dampers is easier, and i found they tighten it up more than 6n ones do with more damping margin and completely eliminate knocking.

I hammered the bowl on the mk3 ones so they became slightly flatter, then added the 6n rubbers to them. not had any knocks from them since.

can anyone explain the use of the caps further then? I'm getting new top mounts tomorrow and I'm wondering whether i should fit these aswell, they swap straight on dont they?

Usually when you bolt on a lowering kit on the mk3, the top caps dont tighten up flush to the chassis allowing the top of the struts to move about and knock.

The 6n ones are shallower so bolt up to the chassis properly. Simple straight swap!

I'm running 6n caps on mine, looks much better. I think there about £12 a pair brand new from VW.

yeah my springs are pretty short now  cool definitely going to fit them then!

yeah the standard ones look like a real after thought of what would just do the job, and not very well it turns out  got a mate braking a 6n so i'll nab his ;)

they are just a bit shorter which, along with the rubber edging around them stop the knocking, I'm sure most people will know there is supposed to be a gap as without it the shock wont be able to turn correctly when you steer the car and makes the shock bend and will increase the likely hood of failure of the shock itself or the mounting............. so if you put them on and the gap totally goes - then put the mk3 ones back on! until they have worn in a bit

the gap occurs from the topmount compressing. if youve got a massive gap your topmounts are usually shagged.

philj kits kill topmounts very quickly as there so stiff, hence a gap appearing.

this is what I've found anyway.
