Hi guys, I'm new here and i have just brought a polo mk3 GT, i got it not working under the assumption that it had a duff battery and a starter motor that needed a refurb. the car needs a service but as i was inspecting it i found a part on the car that is snapped in half. it looks like a giant resistor. i would be grateful for any input. also the car was sitting for 2 years what else do you think i need to do to it?

thanks for fast reply, will add pics of the part in the morning, it is situated under the bonnet on the passenger side. it is attached to the arch wall and has 2 yellow wires coming off it. its some kind of coil.

Sounds like the ignition coil.

It is the dim/dip resistor for the headlights

X2 is it cylindrical? If the wires are yellow then I would say its the domain resistor. Just unplug it, that way it's out of the equatio, all it does is put the dipped beam lights on at half power with the sidelights.

Lol you tit. Since when has your ignition coil had 2 yellow wires on it ffs! It needs a big black ht lead on it for a start!

Its the dim/dip thing as has been said.

Ye, dim dip resistor. All it does is bring the dip beam up to half power to boost the light output when the when the switch is on sidelights and the engine running.

It was only fitted to the UK spec cars for some strange reason, especially when certain EU countries at the time were forcing manufacturers to build cars where the lights came on automatically with the ignition, Volvo and Saab being the best example.

TBH, most people unplug it and forget it exists especially when they have LED sidelights fitted so its not a biggie.

If your paying today then your membership pack should also be with you by next week. :)

Early mk2's dont come with them :p

Thanks guys, now I know what it is, you guys are extremely helpful. I have another question however, the car has just had a new battery fitted, and it will only start once every 10 turns of the key or so, is this a solenoid problem?

Vague description = inaccurate answer and I was hardly going to go raking around my engine bay at 1:45am. FYI not everyone knows every square inch of an engine bay off the top of their head, unbelievable I know

If the starter motor is turning the engine and engaging, doesn't that mean that it's functioning normally?

Do you mean this relay (pic) because when the ignition is on it makes an almighty buzzing sound?

Buzzing sound in a MK2 when the ignition is on? That's most likely the front speaker..

Hi guys, I can now rule out everything else mentioned, it was a dodgy fuel pump relay next to the Ecu

Fuel pump wasn't priming when ignition was switched on. Replaced the relay now everything works ok
