Forged AEE internals

Mine will be on carbs man haha ;)

Not sure how an ABD piston looks.

I'd rather use a decomp plate than machine pistons for lowering comp ratio.

I'd love to know the cause of all the AEE piston crowns falling off lol

The dish in the top, and the recess for the piston rings, those two voids meet too close. There's just not enough metal there, so they can crack. The crack then either comes out further round or loses it deep and breaks the whole piston in half.

The 1.4 8v 6n piston sorts this, there's twice as much metal there as the fill is in that part of the dish, so they're more bowl shaped. These pistons can be used as an upgrade to strengthen an AEE and also up the compression ratio.

Look in my coupe's thread for ABD pistons dude, they're very solid/heavy with them having the comp chamber in them, means they have to have extra material than none dished.

ABD dimensions?

I have a 1.4 8v...20vt rods with the 1.4 pistons and a Decomp plate? :)

Sounds good.

ABD uses a 75mm bore.

Ah ok mate,

Gonna weld up my cylinders and drill them out again to 75

Make sure you use a sharp drill bit.

Id research in getting some strong internals for the AEX you have then, and go for around 1 bar boost with a charger 8-)

STRONG internals and a bar of boost? Fuck that shit, strength is for power! Haha

Why isn't this done yet?

Had a hair cut man! Sorry, just filing some conrod bushes to fit now

Don't forget to chemical metal the bores so you can fit 1.4 pistons

Are the pistons of the 6n 1.4 8v any different to the 1.6?

  • Author

Apparantaly so according to mr MK a couple of posts back, I thought 6n 1.3/1.4/1.6 pistons were the same.

I have a 1.4 lay around you see hmm!

So, pimped out 20vt rods,,, 1.4 8v pishtons & decompression plate/washers and lots of RTV??

Would that still equate to around a 1.6 though?

Trying to work it out in my head lol. Surely the piston would need to be more dished/shorter to keep the comp down due to using the flat head but then you lose displacement?

Really cant think straight haha!

Not sure I feel the need to use a flat face head, surely that'd rocket the comp up?

I love the idea of a charger, and had thought g40/60/eaton, but i just think ill be breaking boxes all the while

the way i see it is if your using a g40 forged piston and g40 head its basically the same as g40 combustion chamber/area, i worked out all the numbers and I'm sure at top dead with the setup I've described the piston sits at a nice place at the top of the bore, if u get what i mean

as for capacity itll be a slightly overbored 1.6 so youll gain displacement,

if i get time ill post all the dimensions up and show how it works

Use a aex block and pistons with 20v rods and Just us a aee head on your 8v block that should drop it enough! then you don't have a decomp plate (I'm not a fan on decomp plates)

Nick your car was a beast at pod, it's actually good to see a few people In this thread that know there stuff regarding to engines and not the "I've put an induction kit on should I be seeing a 30bhp increase" or " how hard is it to fit a turbo? Does it bolt straight on" this stuff is pretty useful regarding pistons ect

I know there's a lot of VERY knowledgable people on here, especially with stuff like this, iv never really ripped loads of engines apart or read up much to know so it's really good info.

My problem is I hate doing research and reading up on stuff, and who knows polos better than you guys <3 haha.

Would be awesome with boost, just unsure how long it will last.

Does anyone know who's boosted AEE PPP mapped?

Should be ok with boost if you don't turn boost too high like only turn it up on events like Santa pod ect and with the internal mods shouldn't see it melting anything? You should DEFINATELY do it

was evansl on here , I'm sure his build thread was just in the main photo gallery

edit , found it http://www.clubpolo.co.uk/forum/index.php?showtopic=136471

MK is right again?

I thought Evans mapped his own stuff? Hence having use of a RR etc?

From what I gathered from speaking to Andy the one they mapped was earlier on this year? If so it couldn't be Evans as that died late last year

Either way I'd defo use different pistons looking at that, maybe look towards the way will has mentioned? If it could be made to work, not only would you be replacing the weak points of the engine but also possibly creating the highest displacement small block polo lump at the same time

Are the AEX pistons up to it though?

I'm sure Evans mapped his own, as was NA on MS to begin with and that.

Think the one PPP did was on g40 management also, as I think they have chips maybe.

Might be worth getting pistons X-ray'd for any signs of fatigue before using them, but the 1.4 pistons seem a good idea.

Does anyone know dimensions of the AEE and the 1.4 6n 8v pistons?

Diameter/compression height/dish volume of piston?

Wonder if I could use the 1.4 ones machines down, losing a bit off the top end should still retain the extra strength around the radius of the dish where the AEE ones are weak?

Evans did do his own mapping. I went to get some stuff from him just after it died when he was breaking it and we had a bit of a chat. He had access to RRs etc. and was playing with the mapping. He didn't get good boost from AEE before it dies as shown above (iirc).

Very interested in this though. I have ADB pistons knocking about (2 sets actually, one set skimmed and from Tommos old motor) if you need measurements, or even need to borrow them Nick. Reading this though I may want to hold on to both sets until I'm set on what to do.

The one I mapped was in a Lupo for 'timmitime' not the one that shat itself. AEA lump, but same thing, and on G40 management. Was on a K03 at 0.6 bar boost. The owner planned on blowing it up, then building a strong bottom end with more boost. Think he's sold it now.
