Looking at buying one in the near future, cheap to run, relatively modern and i commute about 70 miles daily so would benefit in so many ways

Just wanted to know everyones opinions on them?

Anything I should look out for when buying?

It wouldn't stay stock height for long, and I'm pretty sure it'll be on my bandeds within a few days few hours

I'm after the 1.4 S. 75bhp or 100, not tooooo bothered which. the 1L i'd also be chuffed with purely because they're good on fuel.

Coilovers are cheap for them (ish), whereas my mk3 is another story..

i had a black 1l just to commute to and from work...and was brilliant on that...tiny as boot space though so just managed to squeeze my sub in.

thats all i use a boot for anyway, my 10, just so the stereo has SOME bass rather than being tinny like standard. I really do want one

I have a 1700 Sdi lupo, it's a brilliant little car! Bit slow compared to my polo, but its great on fuel!

I have been thinking about the Sdi. How slow is pretty slow? The 1.7 is misleading when it doesn't have a turbo haha

It is very misleading without the turbo! Ha. Erm, don't know what to compare it to, it's not that bad, it's just not nippy like my GT. It will be perfect for your 70 mile commute!

Cheers mate, wanna get the arosa on bandeds and yeah you can pick coilys for around £200 and the pedal boxes like to go, not as much as 6ns ect but have a look out, obviously cambelt changes ect, also door straps go on like them like no ones business, not exspensive fix or hard but just a heads up, also the light warning for when you leave your lights on are another thing, mine doesn't work but not bothered, I'd recommend the 1.4 sport a it's 100bhp and very fun the 1.4s is the 75bhp but has extra like levy windows, and to be honest the 1.7 are very very slow lmao, and they seem to fetch for more so if I was in your boat go for the lupo or arosa sport because by the time you spend the extra on buying a diesal the diesal difference in price will not be much more, plus you get centre exhaust

Go stare at your brakes or research what a piston looks like

Beware the 16v's they have weak bottom ends leading to burning oil, so look for signs of the owner having put oil in a lot. If they have been, steer clear.

1.7d's are heavy on the front suspension, so expect worn bushes. They can have gearbox problems, so listen hard on the test drive.

Oops yes yeti is right, there not commonly bad but there is a few with weak bottom ends, some people put the bbz engine in

Good point! £30 a year tax too. I'm eyeing up 6n2's with the same engine in at the minute. I'd say a Lupo TDI's a very good choice.

Bad news is they're not that common in the Lupo, I've only ever seen them in 2002 cars, which was about the last year of the Lupo being made. They're a bit more common in the Arosa.

I dont know much about them but I do love the way they look, and i'm not a big fan of more modern stuff.

Gay car (I can't talk) but the pick would be the TDi everytime or the 100hp 16v again as some people said they can have issues, I've heard people have issues at 60k to 80k but it is rare when I had my 6n2 16v (AFK like a lupo) I did 20k trouble free miles and when some berk wrote it off it was just shy of 150k, pulled extremely well for what it was and was economical.

The front wing on that Lupo in the pic, i believe it's aluminium as it's the GTi, it hasn't really been bent to oblivion for trying to fit wheels that don't fit..? Please tell me that's just light reflection..?

Look at it as a whole - you'll probably save it in fuel and tax!

YOU DRIVE AN MX5! That's not a dis to mx5's though they're nice looking cars and they've gotta be fun to drive, we just rip my friend for having an mx5 and he rips me for wanting a Lupo. Homos for life. Thanks for your input though I appreciate it, I guess if you look after a valver it'll look after you. How economical is the 1.4 100bhp though. I mean, it surely can't be doing 50 to the gallon haha?!

Seriously now though - yeah the tdi would be nice. I have a friend who reckons he's pushing 120-130bhp with a few mods, which is impressive. But insurance probably wouldn't cover me because of the turbo and my age. Thing is, I drive better than most of the "nice people" around my way. Pfffft. I suppose it's just worth the phone call.

So order of preference?

1 - 1.4tdi

2 - 1.4 100bhp

3 - 1.0 for mpg

4 - 1.4 75bhp

5 - non turbo'd agricultural vehicle engine in a Lupo

Will get some quotes. Can't cost too much to change mid policy for me anyway. An old 1.3 with mods must be on par with a modern 1.4 standard...

The 1.4 tdi will be cheaper on insurance than you think

I have a 1.5dci turbo clio and the insurance is cheaper than the 1.2 equivalent mate

I would also say go for the tdi though due to tax and stupid good mpg

My dci averages 66mpg all the time and is te same £30 a year tax

Test drive each see which one you like best, then do some insurance quotes!
