As stickied is a guide for swapping engine numbers on logbooks and changing your tax class if relavent...

So I have done this on my mk3, sent it off in August but was a bit of a mission because they wanted evidence the engine was fitted and such, so sent it all back off again...

Received my stuff back from the local DVLA office about the start of Oct IIRC, with a new tax disc with the correct cost on it.

The local office then send your V5 to the DVLA Swansea, to be processed much like when you buy a new car, so it goes onto their computer system, and you get it back 4-6 weeks later or whatever.

So my tax is up the end of this month (next Wed), still no logbook.

If I go online to tax it, it says I cant due to a recent change, I can only do it with the correct tax reminder or V5, or locally, but you need your V5 or reminder for that too.

I spoke to them, and they said until my new V5 is processed, it wont be correct on their system as being a 1.6, and therefore cant be taxed.

So basically now I'm stuck awaiting my logbook to be done so I can tax it in time.....

All they have done is 'prioritised' it gets processed faster, BUT this can still take up to FOUR WEEKS, baring in mind they should have had it around 4 weeks already.

I said so what if its not back in time..to what I was told well you wouldnt be able to tax it, but there maybe something we can do - we'll cross that bridge when we come to it...

So basically I may be unable to tax my car for a few weeks, so my ADVICE is, if you follow this process, ensure there is a couple of months tax left on your car so you dont potentially end up being stuck without a car like me!

Its pretty annoying really, trying to be legit and legal unlike just telling my insurer, and its such a massive effort, I can see why people dont bother, but I still do...its like being insured and not declaring mods IMO.

So I think iv bought another car anyway so hopefully if it doesnt come in time it wont be too much of an issue, but still bloody annoying!

Especially as they can see its been changed at the local office on their system!

That's just the problem, they don't just go on cylinder capacity, it's all to do with emissions. The whole thing is geared at getting more tax out of all of us. No wonder they dare'n't call it a Road Fund licence any more, they never spend money on roads anyway!!

What cracks me up is that Nick, like myself, has done this legitimately in order to pay higher tax. And the DVLA still wanna make it difficult.

You could understand if I was claiming to put an engine in which qualified for a lower band, but trying to prove I needed to pay higher tax wasn't easy - they rejected my first application and wanted written proof from someone who couldn't tell it was a bigger engine because externally the engine was identical.

What made mine so tricky was the engine number was registered as a 1.4 so they wouldn't accept it was a 1.6. The answer was to write a full explanation of the work that'd been done, the maths, the lot - and write it on headed paper from a garage.

If I hadn't known someone with a garage who trusted me with a blank sheet marked up with his business, it'd have been harder for sure.

It didn't take long though, something like a couple of weeks for the rejection and another couple of weeks for the V5.

Nightmare - hopefully it will be here by Wednesday so I can tax it at least!

Could it be that the 1.6 was never an option on the older models but was on the 6n? and the DVLA computer goes into meltdown over this? it thinks this is an impossible combination?? then the numbskulls in DVLA can't cope, if the computer says NO then it can't be possible

Sounds like a ball ache! If there is no change in tax band and you are insured correctly is there really any point in changing the log book? Doesn't sound worth the hassle to me.

Pre-'01, all the Polo petrol engines are in the same tax band apart from all the 1.6 engines. So if you put a 1.6 in and don't inform the DVLA, then you won't be paying enough tax and they'll bend you over hard and fast when it surfaces.

Yeah, the declaring part was easy - only rejected the first time as the receipt from when I bought the engine wasn't enough as was declared in the 6n after that.

This time now is just awaiting the V5 to be processed like buying a new car - this thread was purely a warning to allow people sufficient time when doing so.

Current v5 will reject the online application due to a recent tax change...so until the new V5 is made and registered as a 1598cc on their system I cannot tax it.

Even locally at post office etc they just basically do as you do online so if the systems wrong it wouldn't help lol!

they make you pay the back dated tax you owe. in other words if you get away with it you're XXX amount in credit, if you get caught you just have to pay the amount of tax that you would of had to pay anyway

the jetta engine conversion was never declared to the DVLA (always was to the insurance). not only was i screwing the government over in road tax, but every time i put non pump fuel in it was screwing them over on that too, every time i drove that thing it was like a big fuck you to Gordon Brown, and it felt good

V5 was processed today.
