Featured Replies

Hi All,

Just a quick question what are peoples opinions on "saftey" when wiring say 4 sets of SMD strips to the wiring of the interior light.

i want to wire these in this weekend - so that when you open the door the floor lights up *had this in my old car too*

Cheers

LED's draw very little current, so existing wiring will be fine with the extra current (depending on how many LED's you're adding) if that's what you're asking...?

Obviously, if you're adding loads of them (100 LED's would be an extra 3A of current for the original wiring, if SMD's use 30mA like their non-SMD counterparts) then you might have an issue.

I have these in my 6n2, there is about 20-25 LEDs in each strip and I have one either side of the the dash and one under each seat, they came with very short leads, so I soldered about two metres and very thin speaker wire to it and used heat shrink tubing to cover the soldered joints then tested where the wire would run. For under the seats I used around a foot of heat shrink over the wires to add some strength to them as there are moving parts and sharp edging, same with the fronts, any sharp corners you should use hear shrink as the wires could easily fray and short out the fuse. It's good practice to use able ties to secure the wires to existing wiring.

Thats about all you could do to keep it safe..

Also you don't have to run a wire up to the light, there should be a connector at the base of the a pilar, you need the switched ground and constant live ( should be red)which are in that connector
