Whos decided to get Windows 8?

Interface takes some getting used too. first job was to ditch the IE for chrome.

Tempted as I see there's a windows app for the Xbox but if its not going to so that good then no point, got an iPhone so ain't gunna help that and my laptop is probably too old to handle such new software

Been playing with it and i miss the start button, thankfully it has a desktop screen so some normality is retained.

It feels and runs a bit like android ice cream sandwich as far as settings menus go, and the email system seems to have been ripped straight out of Gmail's app.

will be reinstalling everything else in the morning and seeing what works.

Let me know how it is, if its any good I may defrag and sort my laptop out and get it going on

I ran the RC of Windows 8 for about a week and thought it was awful.

Maybe it is just that I was a bit daunted by the big change in UI. But personally I think that is not the way to go as far as laptop and desktop computing is concerned. I'll be sticking with Mac OS and Linux.

The UI is a bit of a strange one, I'm trying to stay in desktop mode as much as possible. but the Start pane does list all your programs but instead of a menu there placed like Apps on a phone.

to me, it's a tablet operating system

Desktop OS - Desktop / Laptop

Server OS - Server

You wouldn't put a server OS on a tablet, and you wouldn't put a tablet OS on a desktop. it's all backwards IMO

I've had the consumer preview for a while, and i still have no idea how it works, and i actually work in a technical job, so have to know!

Amen to that. I had an old laptop that ran Windows 2000, most stable machine I've ever used*. I currently have Windows 7 on my desktop and just a plain install of Ubuntu Linux on my laptop as I hardly use it and when I do it's only for surfing the web.

*Until it blue screened one day and never worked again.

I have a really old toshiba laptop, with 1 USB port. It was supposed to be running win 98, and it's been replaced with windows XP - i use this for vagcom and it's never let me down, and it has sustained plenty of knocks and bumps, but it refuses to die, which i'm happy about :)

Yep, me too, that machine/OS was a champ. I once did a search on it which was just '*' so it showed every single file that was on the HD, selected them all and hit enter. It made some pretty bizarre noises with all the error messages that were popping up but it didn't crash. It was one of these or very similar. I miss the little nub it had instead of a trackpad.

When I worked in IT, we were moving sites. I was checking the uptimes on the servers as I took them out. Most the 2k ones were on well over a year, if not on 2 or 3.

Win2K was the last bombproof Windows OS.

However, I'd still take Mac OS any day.

The first Mac OS I used was 9, that was on my first ever Mac. A Powermac G3 Pismo which I bought from a car boot sale for next to nothing. I was about 12 at the time.

not a fan, purely because it offers me little or no advantage over xp.

tbh i like the look of xp more than the later windows os's

once youve deleted all the shit you dont need the "start" screen is easy to use and entirely useless

I shove it in desktop which has everything I use as i didnt make much use of the start menu on the older OS's so no loss really.

I've got it, its crashed more than a pissed cyclist.

I really don't like it, clearly it's designed for touch screen, however it's designed like a phone for computers, it's like 2 operating system in one, it's confusing and backwards. I'm very happy with windows 7, does everything i need, EVERYTHING and it doesn't crash
