I agree vista was shit but 7 was pretty stable

no to appealing, i like the feel of the windows task bar and how you can navigate through that

windows 8 is catering for a specific market, basically they want to make it a family media center that can be connected to a tv for internet streaming and entertainment, easy to navigate round and use by all ages.

hopefully they bring out a more professional versions for work and people that are used to the feel of windows since the xp version.

definitely not upgrading until i see a reason too, even if its free or not

Upgraded from vista to this 2 weeks ago, all i gotta say is fuck me was it bad in the first week of installing it. Such as it restarting itself 2 - 3 times a day, internet was ok except for when on facebook which was so slow i thought i was on dial up and every video i tried to view adobe just crashes. At the moment i'm not experiencing any of that anymore, but i'm still kinda annoyed with the screen resolution resetting itself every time i switch it on

Running both Windows7 and 8 - Hated Win8, and still do now.

Though this has made it some what more useful to which I "may" switch over completely.

I'm seriously considering getting it for my new pc build as it's only £25 for an upgrade, download version to Windows 8 Pro.

Now that Microsoft have screwed us europeans over on the pricing (I bought an educational discount win7 for £35 a while ago, now it's £70) this seems like a good deal.

I'd definitely go with Start8 too.

If not, I'll probably just stick with my 64bit version of Vista, which to be honest is not that bad once it's all patched, up to date with it's service pack and all the useless crap turned off.

So by Microsoft's law, XP after over 10 years is rock solid and got that way about 5 years ago, so vista should be okay now seeing as it's 5 years old, Windows 7 still has some work and fixing to do (it's by no means perfect) and windows 8 will be shite for the next 5 years.

In all seriousness though, if you want a licence for Windows 8, get one before the end of January for £25, after that pricing will be around £150.

Well I'm not switching after more test i got lost at just trying to play music in backgroud, but these are all apps and no dedicated wmp. You will still have to access the start screen.

Sticking with Win7

Windows 7 and XP are the only Microsoft operating systems I will run at the moment.

Win2k and XP are built on the same underpinnings so it's not surprising that people who used both say they are a fan.

Windows XP was very troublesome when it came out for me. Lots of games designed for 95/98/Me wouldn't work. I had to run dual boot for a while until patches and workarounds came out. I lost MS-DOS support too, which was one of the reasons I kept an old dos machine with windows 98 SE kicking about. Of course you could use a boot disk but the hardware didn't support dos either (on board sound, etc)

My experiences with vista seem to be that the computers sold to run it weren't powerful enough or had enough memory to run it properly. You really need 3gb+ to run it and the computers of the vista era usually shipped with considerably less than that. Actually, this was also the case with Windows XP. It really needs 512mb of ram to get going, ideally over 1gb and again computers weren't really shipping with those amounts at the time of release.

I don't see the point in upgrading, I only upgraded to 7 a couple of years ago on my main machine, and that was mostly because of the 3gb limit of 32bit xp

Nope. Vista is still supported as is XP on extended support.

According to Microsofts web page mainstream support for Vista finished april this year and extended support for it finishes in 2017.

XP finishes in April 2014.

Both are still getting patches.

XP was good, shame that the UI is pig ugly though. I wonder when Microsoft will finally implement a proper skinning system from Windows? Some proper duel screen support would be nice too.

I am using the Zune desktop theme for XP, apart from the orange start button it looks way better. Only problem is it looks a bit like vista now.

Windows XP makes for a great corporate operating system, yes its ugly but its functional and very stable these days. The majority of my clients use XP and have no need or reason to upgrade to windows 7 or 8.

As for dual monitor support, it could be better but I fine a program called multimonitor sorts most things out.
