Howdo,

I've got a 2000 Polo GTi 16v but it has developed a fault on the 'box.

It sounds like the synchro has gone on 2nd and 5th gears. The oil has been changed but made no difference so am I right in thinking it's a recon jobbie?

I'm not too bothered if it is as the car itself is in great shape so it would be worth doing, just wanted some advice first before I get it done.

It's worst on the 5th gear as 2nd can be overcome by taking a slow change but nothing can stop it when going into 5th.

Are you quite sure that the clutch is clearing fully? (Too much free play in the cable, or that the disc may have become contaminated.)

One check that may prove/disprove the above, is by attempting to select reverse, if you get a 'crunching, sound whilst doing that, it could well point to a clutch problem.

It is of course, possible that the problem is with the synchro cones as you say, but it just seems to be a bit of a coincidence that the two gears have developed the same problem at the same time.

Whilst I'm no mechanic, I'm a bit surprised by two gears going as well. I've got a friend who is a mechanic though and am going to get him to have a good look over it before I go doing anything drastic (or expensive!)

Opposite ends of the throw, those two gears, I recon you wanna get the exterior linkage checked first.
