harris' daily derv

Featured Replies

Hey kids!

Bought a golf today as a run around/work slut/I got bored.

It's a mk4 golf 1.9 TDI 90 yoooo! SE, bare good features compared to mk3, such as:

Electric windows

Central locking

Power steering

Headlights which actually illuminate the road

Air con! Well there's an AC button anyway

Even got a cd player.

Bought it cheap off a lad at work, few issues and needs a bit of love, but it's all there!

Got an Overboost fault which is very common, but you can avoid it just by how you drive it.

Also leaks coolant out the header tank til ita dropped to a certain level then loses no more..unfortunately that level is below where the warning light comes on haha!

It's had HG done & it runs at 90 degrees constant and heater is hot. May just be the cap, unsure, will see.

Only pic I have

7086A25A-CA1F-4C4C-B3AC-0C5C3DA77AFA-449

So to summarise:

I don't like silver cars

I don't like diesels

I don't like mk4 golfs just because they're so common

I hate issues with cars involving the engine, such as Overboost faults and coolant issues

So all in all a brilliant choice! Hahaha

Isnt there a common problem with some of the vw coolat caps? A certain colour one? Or is that older models

You didn't! - at least i had the excuse of the wife choosing it..

Jeez it's boring..

it was the black caps however I'm sure only mk3 polos and golfs had the black ones, the better one is blue

seems alright harris, could be worse, you could have an SDI. just get it mapped geezer.

Well if it's pressurising there's a few things it maybe IMO...

Waterpump not circulating properly

Partial blockage?

HG issue

Cracked/pourus head

But it runs fine... Literally just drops below the minimum and stays there...unless that level is just too low for it to push anymore out.

When I pulled up from work last night the header tank was hissing like the pressure relief, not spitting fluid out though...so it's either pressurising too much or the cap is a bit fucked and relieving at too low a pressure or something I don't know - knowing my luck it will be the head that's fucked haha.

Looks good to me mate, i know its boring to drive (like the jetta) but some days you'll enjoy the hassle free, quiet and comfy ride.

I've just got in the jetta after driving the breadvan around, and even though i had such a laugh in the GT for a few weeks, it was good to be back in the green-mobile.

Any plans? Or you concentrating on the polo?

Boring is a good choice of word haha!

Not really, tidy it up a bit and give it some love.

Maybe some lows and TT comps lol

Aye, make it look abit more appealing.

Nice cars though, good to drive.

You can run these non-PDs on veg oil you know! My brother's been running his on stuff from the chippy for the last 10k miles

Very quick wash. It needs a fucking good polish.

It's fairly tidy, but I don't actually care haha!

Got to go on:

Engine mounts & new OEM dogbone mount

Water pump

Thermostat

New coolant cap

Oil + Filter

Air filter

Discs and pads all round

Proper easy to drive, think when I jump back in the polo it will excite me a lot more, I'm too used to driving the polo daily so the novelty has worn off with it :)

Look how much cooler the polo is

Needless to say, with a bit of lowering and rid of them gash wheels it will be great.

nick i bet you look so small in the golf :p

Loved cruising home in the dark and rain from work in this tonight. Polo is horrendous it this is just civil and quiet.

Boring as fuck mind, but that's the point!

New coolant cap on...seems well at the minute. But watch this space <<< that'll be speaking too soon!

Oh dear

I know guy - I know :(

It's had most stuff done tbh,

Rebuilt bottom end, stem seals, HG, cambelt, clutch, cat..tyres, bushes, starter motor, few other bits.

£500. Can't complain

Oh dear

Why ohdear? Its probably one of the best dailys you can buy for sub £1000!!

  • Author

Oh dear because it's fucking boring lol

Thats what dailys are for!!

Because I've driven a mk4 golf a fair bit (albeit) a 20vt, and when that is one of the dullest cars I've driven I can only imagine how bad it would be with a 90(?)bhp derv in it. No doubt its a very capable car and I have no doubt it will do all nick asks of it, but I have a sneaky suspicion from nicks replies in this thread already, that he knows exactly what I meant by "oh dear"

As for the best sub 1k daily, I ain't even gonna get into that in someone's build thread. Feel free to start a thread asking what's the best sub 1k daily and I will give my opinion on it.

You asked and I answered. Now let's not drag this thread down like the others eh?

Haha nah there are a lot other cars which are cheap and fun, probably as reliable better on fuel etc etc etc.

Someone offered me a car, was havin issues taxing the polo and had the cash so!

It's something to do, being a non PD engine I don't have a desire to mod it for loads of power/torques etc, like you say, it's something I can just use.

It's dull; boring, a boat, quiet, pretty comfortable compared to polo, doing average 50mpg with this stupid fault...serves a purpose..even if it's boring aha :)

Tbf my mate got his non pd passat up to about 130-140bhp iirc and didn't spend a lot on it. They can still be tuned to go well, just a tuning box gave his a fair amount more beans
