engine conversion log book change

Featured Replies

I have a 1043cc mk2 saloon, and I'm think of getting a mk2 1300 to go in it what i want to know is if i tell dvla and they change my log book to suit does it then show up to the insurers as a 1.3 polo saloon or a modified polo saloon? will it make the insurance as though I'm insuring a 1.3 or will it be more expensive because it is modified?

cheers

cheers, i just want to know how it will effect my insurance?

you have to tell your insurance its had an engine change anyway you cant just leave it and hope the paperwork shows them its a change as it still invalidates your insurance

So it will cost more to insure as it will be modified and not treated as though it was a 1.3 model. I'm not making any sense now am I.

if you do change your engine on the log book the dvla now want a letter from the garage that fitted it

if you did it your self they want a letter from your nearest vw garage and book it in so they can check block and head code and if its fitted safely

and sign it off for you..

if you attempt to change it with out a stamped letter, they take your tax away and you cant tax your car again till they know who did it

There is a whole thread on declaring engine swaps.

Yes you will be required to tell your insurance about your engine conversion, they will most likely class it as a modified car so make sure your insurer covers modified vehicle or they will cancel your cover.

Not entirely true in my experience.

You have to follow the instructions on their website, providing evidence.

You don't need VW to tell them the engine number, any garage will do.

And taking tax off you? First iv heard of it

a friend of mine had just had to find this out the hard way

he had 6 months tax snd the dvla have taken it off because if the cars not a 1.3 then is shouldnt be taxed as a 1.3

and most garages dont want to say they have fitted the engine and hold what you have or haven't done right in there hands

You apply to change the tax if it changes category.

Which with polos unless you fit a 1.6 or a big block isn't an issue.

cheers guys, sounds like a bit of a pain in the arse to me but would be worth it in the long run, if i was to put the same spec engine in i suppose technically id have to declare that too because the engine codes change? but really its swings and roundabouts in that case.

I think what he's saying is, if he changes it on the log book to a 1.3, when he phones up for a insurance quote he will tell them the details of the car, would it come up as a 1.3 or would it still come up as a 1.0 and he would have to tell them its a 1.3. If it comes up in their system as a 1.3 he wouldn't have to tell them its had an engine swap as they will already be aware of what engine is in it, in this hypothetical scenario he might not be penalized for it being a conversion and just simply be penalized for it being a 1.3

Exactly what I'm saying, because it wouldnt be modified in the sense that it'd be a standard 1.3 engine so I am just trying to figure out how it works.

Example has anyone taken a 1l mk3 and put a 1.3 gt lump from a mk3 in it? And if so it now insured as a gt or a modified 1l?

I'd imagine it stays as what the VIN was originally build and registered as unfortunately.

It will be fully registered with the new engine, and the new engine only. Even typing my reg into Hadrian panels they have my car as a 1985 Polo Coupe S blue 1598cc.

There is no trace of your previous engine, so the insurers will just see it as a 1.3 Polo and are unlikely to know it used to have a smaller engine in it. Unless it's a Fox, as they'll know by their system there wasn't a 1.3 Fox.

my 6n is still registered as a polo 1.0L hatchback even though it has had a 16v conversion. only the cc and the engine number has changed.

When I was doing my insurance a while back after a 1L to 1.3L I just chose the 1.3 option. When I typed in the reg it would come up with 1.0l but you could change the engine size. Whenever I phoned up my insurance company, they would always think it was a 1,0 but I would tell them it was a 1.3. They never questioned it.

I didn't ever change it on the log book though. My point being is you can tell the insurance company what engine is in it, and they don't ask questions (or at least admiral didn't). I was never asked whether it was a conversion or not. In hindsight I would probably declare it as a conversion as I wouldn't want to be bitten on the arse, but I was naive then and thought it would be ok to just tell them it was a 1.3, and not a conversion. I wasn't trying to blag anything, just didn't know any better
