Aup guys, thought i'd make one of these build threads. I passed my test at the start of the year and obviously, being the VW maniac that I am, instantly bought the best 9n i could at the time.

I got it off a rich family, only having 52,000 on the clock since 2002, full VW service history from 2002-2010, and primarily owned by an elderly couple so it wasn't being thrashed. It was then bought by a girl as a first car, who had it for 2 years. I am chuffed with what I have managed to get for the money I paid.

Now i am getting driving experience and no claims, the modding can start. The overall look I am going for in the end is going to be clean and close to OEM, but with that lovely stance..

So the 'build' started this week, with the door speakers and tweeters getting upgraded to Vibe 6.5". The only reason I did this was because the left door speaker decided to die on me a few weeks ago, and I like to listen to music whilst I'm driving! The next purchase were some xenon bulbs for the front, they cost me close to nothing and have improved the look of the car quite dramatically. After fitting the bulbs, I debadged the boot, obviously leaving the classic VW badges alone.

In the coming weeks, I should hopefully be purchasing some coilies and new wheels. Also considering the 9n3 rear lights.

Just a few quick questions to anybody reading this;

I am on a tight budget, so will be buying the JOM coilovers and will hopefully drop the car the full 80mm. Will i need shorter drop links to do this?

Also, I was originally intending on getting 15" audi pepperpots, but i have seen pictues of them on a 9n, and without dropping the car over 100mm they look small, so i think i will go with some 16 or 17 wheels, anybody have an opinion on this?

my 9n is dumped on coilies with rear adjusters out and front helper springs out... it is still not low enough at the front for 16s so i have just bought some 17s :)

shit i really dont know what to do about the pepperpots. I want a nice stance but i dont think the 15's and an 80mm drop will do enough

you'll never get stance with 15s unless you go for air, especially with pepperpots which are ridiculously skinny wheels

16s are a good size wheel to run, but you'll never get a properly decent stance with 16s, you're gonna struggle, which is why i've now bought 17s for mine

Thanks for the positive feedback lads, really helps with motivation when you have others who are guiding you along the way! I am no reconsidering the wheels, going for 16's or 17's. I will just have to wait until some things pop up, the only problem with me is I like individuality, unfortunately with my current budget I won't be able to be too picky with my wheels. Hey ho, I have quite a long time to decide, so I'll keep checking out the for sales and eBay. Are there any other places you guys look for wheels?

Oh, and to clear my mind about the coilies, in order to the run the JOM at 80mm, do i need shorter drop links? I have read some people suggest they are necessary when dropping more than 60mm, but some people don't bother. Opinions on this?

Just a quick update, got some new vibe door speakers fitted, kept them hidden behind the original door cards. They sound amazing, especially due to be used to only having one side working. The major mods, such as whees and coilies are now being bought after christmas. Mainly because i am working a lot over christmas, therefore i will have more money available to me so it can be spent on better wheels

Just wondering what vibe speaker you have inside your door cards as I tried to fit vibe door speakers and theey wouldn't fit cause my windows wouldn't wind down all the way and had to take them back and stuck with the original 9n speakers now thanks mate

i had to get some adapter plates, otherwise i would have had the same problem as you.

Quick question to anyone who is reading this, I am obviously looking at coilovers, and my budget is (at a push) £250. Is the JOM set the best value for money? Also, is anyone else running these on a 9n who can post a picture to show me how low they go? Thanks

get yourself raceland coilovers they are within your budget and are a better ride than JOM ones

How are you not low enough with adjusters and helpers out? and 16's!! I'm on 15's 3/4 way down at front and helpers still in the back and my car sits pretty nice, put pics of your 9n up i wanna see it dude lol

there's a pic dude, but when i mean not low enough i'm talking proper stance... as in tucking tyre and pretty much just rim showing :p

I dont know how low to go on the coilies to suit the different wheels. now you say you have completely slammed yours with 16's, there is no way i can do that due to the roads i live on so what can i do? haha

Scraping is all part of the fun, but realistically you will have to go quite low to avoid arch gap with 16s. I had mine wound all the way down and still had gap so it was out with rear adjusters and front helpers and now I could wind the front down more and tuck but the back won't go any lower and is just shy of tucking rim. Depends really mate, if you want to close up arch gap but not be too low (is there such a thing!?) then 17s are probably your best bet or a chunky tyre on 16s or 15s.

Scraping is fun, but you haven't seen the roads I drive on! haha. i wouldnt be just scraping, it would probably be ripping my car apart, plus i would be bottoming out way too much for my liking! haha. I'll have to just keep an eye out on some 16's or 17's. We'll see what santa brings cheers for the advice guys!

The offset of a 9n polo is 43. Now, i have found some wheels that i can get a good deal on, but the offset is 25. Can somebody please tell me whether that is ok, or will that fuck up my car? haha. I have read that offset needs to be as similar as possible to standard numbers, however some people say it doesnt matter. Can anybody clarify this please? According to the person that owns the wheels, they will fit on to a polo, everything else matches, but i just dont know what the offset changes, in comparison to my standard steelies.

Get some audi TT comps man, looks sick & they're 17s so can play it safe with the lowering
