how to fit motor bike fuel pump ?

Featured Replies

I'm curious to know how to fit a bike fuel pump to to supply my bike carbs, iff you have done it can you please explain how. I'm assuming it replaces the inline fuel pump as this regulates the pressure the fuel goes to the throttles bodies. Is it just a case of removing the inline pump and replacing it for the bike pump, then connecting it to the loom connector under the car ? i haven't actually looked under there or have a good idea of what it looks like. This picture is my fuel pump i will be using. It has two small hoses coming off it, one has a small air filter in line of one of the hoses and the loom connector is two pins. And the hose with the filter will this be the hoses that comes from the fuel tank ?

Sounds about right! Definitly gunna get a matching pump to go with my zx7r carbs, using a facet pump seems stupid when the pump that came with the carbs would work. Just trial and error really

Tbf it doesn't make sense to use a facet fuel pump , or even regulator as a bike fuel pump is reasonably priced , mine was 42 pound delivered . Also how have you done your accelerator cable ? Do you have any internet links to websites were you bought the parts also ?

Facet is 20-25 quid. Makes sence to me.

But to do it correctly is not a lot of money is what I am saying

Both ways are doing it correctly lol

Hey dude,

I really believe a bike pump is the easiest method - after all it's designed to work with them.

In the FAQ there is a guide for fitment, however. Depends what car you have at the minute?

Mk2 IIRC is just a fuel pickup? No lift pump? (correct me if wrong)

And a mk3 has a liftpump/sender unit - fuel can be drawn through this freely, regardless of the pump running or not (video in the FAQ thread shows this)

You basically need a live 12v feed to the red, and earth the black. Ignition fed live, ideally with a fuel cut off inertia switch.

On your pump, the fitting with the filter is the connection to the tank, the feed "in" line, the other is what needs connecting to your carbs.

Worth adding - on a bike the tank is above the pump, thus making the pump almost gravity fed, whereas you'll be relying on it to drag the fuel out the tank - it may increase the wear rate on the pump so keeping an eye out for a spare maybe advisable.

After around 8-10k mine is fine, no hesitation on long journeys or any fuel leaking from carbs/breathers and such.

Regulator method IMO is just pointless, facet's do work too; but to be honest you can pick bike pumps up sub £30 and work spot on :)

yeah when the fuel tank is low its trying to suck like a straw with a emtpy glass.. Going round corners etc leaving the pump working alot harder and ticking away.. Ok when fuel tank is preety much full but my wallet only lets me do this at start of month lol ..

I think i may replace my tank with a mk2 item as these are gravity fed :)

I don't have that Jamie? How low do you let yours go?!

Bogg bros must have gave me duff information then ....

I think I have put a mk2 tank on my mk3 , it has two small outlets which I joined with hose , so I use these to gravity feed my bike pump ?

Everyone sings bogg bros praises... Yet they seem to think everything should have a set of r1 carbs on it for more power. Just no... Lol

Tbf they never said r1 to me , and they have been doing it longer than all of us , so I believe what they say :-)

If your fuel pump (and carbs) is higher than your fuel tank it will not be gravity fed.

My car can suffer with fuel starvation but only when very low and only when I've done a lot of right hand bends. This is due to the fuel pump being higher than the tank meaning you can get an air pocket at the pump so it can't pump anything.

Personally I think the best method might be Mk3 Lift pump in the tank feeding to a bowl like filter (like the filter king) and then to the bike fuel pump and then the carbs.

But there are +ve and -ve to all the options you can choose.

Cheers for the info so far lads , particularly Harris . An answer to the fuel tank would be great , and also the accelerator cable to. Would like parts so I do not have to shorten my cable and solder a nipple on ect .

I will google this filter king now , sounds interesting . And to the comment on a video in the faq. I will also check this out , I have not looked at the faq n a long time , not due to being lazy or being a pleb and not checking the faq before I write a post , just because it has been hi jacked so much with useless banter , it makes my eyes bleed and I would be there all day haha

In the top of the mk2 tank is just the fuel gauge sender. On the front of the tank at the bottom right hand side (of looking at the rear of the car) is the outlet and inlets of the tank.

Have a look in my build thread. Its basically a guide on how I did it and I'm sure there is some info on the throttle cable and how it was connected to the pedal.

So a mk2 tank outlets are at the bottom? That's even better then.

Mine draws fuel out the top of tank through the sender. Pump is in bay, far from tank and higher (all just wrong) and works fine.

You don't really need fuel pressure just flow when it's demanded

Yeah it is better than trying to draw it up the tank without the lift pump.

I should have said that I don't have problems with it on the road its only when its on track. But being that's its at the front right it is more susceptible to fuel starvation under acceleration and right hand corners when lower on fuel. (especially as most tracks are clockwise)

I do normally run with at least half a tank in on track days and it does see to solve the problem but its not really a fix!

Right lads , so I think were getting there , how should I set up my bike pump for the better set up ? Eg were should I mount it ect ? I have. a mk3 with a lift pump, get rid of my inline pump .... And I looked on your black nz thread , but all I could see was a acelerator pedal

its on my green one.. :)

its about here I think! :)

Yep you can get bike fuel pumps for £20-30 so cheaper than a facet + regulator. MK2 tank is ideal but on a mk3 looping the lift pump through a swirl pot and allowing the bike pump to draw from that seems ideal.

Yeah nick .. never gets short of fuel eg starvin marvin in me carbings ..

But pump just has to work harder when fuel runs low .. I run it lower than i should tbf but never splutters etc :)

Lol Jamie your off your tits, so now add a swill pot ? I think I need to understand the lay out for the fuel line system and order ect lol . My issue is my car is my daily , so I can't just go and remove all my fuelling parts to see how it all works . This is why I can't wait for my loon project next year , it will be a non runner and its going to be stripped to a shell :-)
