Firstly, hello and welcome to ClubPolo!

nice to see a new member

right, where to start...

read this

have a read of that above

one thing you might need to look out for is if the clutch pedal is lower than the brake pedal/squeeky clutch pedal

this means the the pedal box need to be repaired, it was a fault from factory due to poor welding, there was a recall a few years back where VW fixed it for free, but i dont think they will fix it now, as the recall was in 2006(?) or something like that

the model polo you must be talking about is the 6n2 polo (mk3 facefilt) which looks like this...

24029038.jpg

[my old car when i first got it]

black bump strips, door handles and grill (where the badge is) this model is called the E, in other words, base spec

the weakness of this year polo seems to be the gearbox, as VW made chocolate gearboxes for their cars around that time

but don't be disheartened, this problem doesn't seem to affect the 1.0L so much

another weakness is electrics, mostly with the electric windows

but again, dont worry, as it is unlikely that a base spec will have electric windows

how ever, the rear washer/blade not working can also be a fault. this is due to a split washer pipe somewhere/burnt out motor

another potential problem could be a leaky sunroof, this is due to the runners that collect water have just popped out of place

so what to look out for:

 clutch pedal is squeeky/lower than brake pedal

 if gearbox is smooth

 if it has electric windows, if they work properly

 if it has a sunroof, if it leaks

 rear washer is working (push one of the indicator stalks forward)

 if the cam belt has been replaced recently (within a year or so)

and being an older car, just the standard things aswell

- full service history

- mot

- tax

- worn seats

etc etc

good luck with the viewing, and if you get it, i'm sure you'll like it

Thanks a lot for this mate, at least I no what to look for now :)

Welcome to the club, you will be gutted by the performance of a 1.0 6n2, it wont pull the skin of a rice pudding, get a 1.4 8v, it will be slow but least it will get upto speed lol.

I would get a 1.4 just haven't done any quotes on them, what the insurance group for the 1.0 and 1.4

not much differance between a 1.4 and 1.0 tbh they are both slow, the 1.0 goes well enough to keep up with traffic and most day to day driving, just give plenty of room for overtakes.

the only notable difference will between the 1.0L and the 1.4 16V 100bhp
