Hey guys.. Just checked my timing and found this...

surely the marks are supposed to be on the 2 teeth closest to eachother?!?! Looks like both cams are a tooth out???

according to autodata they should be. ill upload the picture now.

So they both need to go up a tooth? would that explain my poor starting and possibly smoke?

Looks out to me, should be level with the top of the head with the bottom pulley lined with the TDC mark

Shows the lower mark too.

Inlet at 3, Exhaust at 9, Crank at 12

Remove the alloy cam cover bit and look down at the bottom pulley, when its at TDC a tooth with the corners missing will line up with a mark which I believe is above the pulley (can't get a pic of that cause engine isn't here) but iirc its a little triangle shaped thing on the crank seal casing

It's the tooth with the tipex on it

Just line the top pulleys up as best you can and it should be daily obvious what you have to line the bottom pulley up with as it will be pretty close to it

100% your cams are a tooth too low

Also when you tension the belt the bottom pulley moves slightly so accommodate for that too

Just realised I still have my crank case knocking about

Think its the small knotch above where the pulley would sits (maybe someone could confirm? The big one has 2v and the small one has 4v stamped next to it)

Cymro I've looked on my afh pulley and there are no timing marks as shown in your illustration, although strangley there is on my 6n2 aux pulley

There should be a little slit in the aux pulley, I wouldn't use it anyway, even though they have a locating peg mines well off true TDC. Use the one on crank toothed pulley.

It's the dead vertical lump on the seal housing casting I believe, if you're unsure, take your plugs out, drop along extension into cyl #1 (closest to belt end) and turn up to TDC, it will be higher either at the 2v mark or 4v, tbh I think it's the vertical one, but no harm checking.

Eric its got to be spot on man, ensure it is, and remember to turn it over TWICE by hand before even attempting to start :)

It's the mark stamped 4v next to it on guys picture. As nick says the most vertical one. And yeh forget the aux pulley

How do i do the tensioner? I keep turning it too far and loosening it

If you're loosening it then you're going the wrong way Eric. Tbh its a right pain in the arse to keep the pulleys in position while tensioning it. If you can find a way to lock the cams in position you will make your life a hell of a lot easier

You cant go too far with the tensioner, it can only get tighter if its going the right way, the arrow just be pointing to around 2 oclock, somewhere in that region, maybe abit more. it should tension in a clockwise direction
