Bump it you fag

Certainly looks right tho, you have double checked the bottom mark is still lining up? As bret said earlier it can look right until you tension it and it pulls it away from the marker. Hope this sorts it anyway

Eric, it's good practice to turn the engine over twice by hand first! Get a battery on it! No wondered it didn't start good!

Yeah all marks line up, cambelt can turn 45 degrees on its longest run

turned it over about 10 times to make sure hahaha!

Turned over fine with plugs out

put plugs in and i got it to run. Then took plugs out and cyl1 literally had a puddle of what may be oil in it. This could also explain it struggling to start surely?

Gonna check the headbolts are torqued up correctly.

If they are then ill take the head off and investigate.

Luckily on an afh u can leave the cams in place. Happy days

Ok and how does it turn over with plugs in and coil disconnected?

Dno mate

gave the headbolts a nip up and no luck.

Head off time. Fuck it.

3...2..1..go!

Head is off... No obvious signs of any issues??? Head gasket looks ok?!?!

Have you established whether no.1 had oil, water or fuel in it?

  • Author

It looked to be oil mate. Ill chuck some pictures up

?? idk..

andy, any ideas bud? or anyone else? have you seen my other thread with videos in?

Edited by erixtar1992

from deduction cylinder 1 is the answer to your smoke issues

  • Author

i know its cyl 1 with the issue lol, shuda seen the puddle of oil on the cylinder!

id therre a way of me checking the rings with the head off

Edited by erixtar1992

Don't you check rings by putting oil in the cylinder and leaving it to see if it stays there or leaks into the bottom end?

  • Author

Thats what I've just done bud. Will have a look in the morning as i put a fair bit in.

Did it about 45 mins ago and lookin good so far

IMG-20121125-WA0012.jpg

What's that rusty mark on top of the gasket?

Does look pretty clean, the oilways look to be properly sealing.

Are you sure the head is solid? Oil may be too thick, could pour neat petrol down the inlet/exhaust valve spring chambers to see if they hold fuel - check the stem seals.

Are you sure the head is true. Looks it by the marks on it anyway from the gasket.

Guess you could check the bores/rings by filling the cylinder with neat petrol. If it leaks past then you know you've got a bad ring.

Don't see why though, you'd have blow-by, surely?

  • Author

Not sure what it was but it wiped off pretty easy.

I'm dismantling the head as we speak

I used 10/40 magnatec oil

I've got new stem seals to go in

  • Author

Just took the exhaust manifold off.

Fuck me all of the exhaust ports are completely full of oil.

Does this indicate stem seals?

Shit, you work fast!

Looks like you have oil escaping through the exhaust there mate

I'd get those bearing caps, springs tappets etc. off that floor if i were you. All to easy to kick grit over those

Eric doesn't particularly work fast, he just cracks on instea of bumming around like most other people lol

  • Author

Theyl be fine on there dude noone really goes in there tbh,

i will give everything a good clean before it goes back anyway :)

And yeah, oil in all 4 cylinders... Makes me think stem seals rather than rings. I know I'm unlucky But all 4 piston rings?? Nahhhhh lol

i had rings go on 3 cylinders Eric on my afh when i first built it up after i bought it i fully refurbed the head and didnt touch the bottom end being an idiot and the bottom end ended up being fubarred so completely rebuilt that in the end forged and lightened though as it was a good excuse
