Eric, I got quoted 100 quid to replace stem seals, re-cut valve seats and skim of head at mr steve's rolling road lol..

He's made a valve compresser which he showed me and toby.. Its on a bench with a foot peddle and takes feck all time he said (Y)

got all valves and stem seals out now.

stem seals werent in great shape at all! so much oil and shit in the head too. gonna put it in the hotwash if i cba to take it to work tomorrow. then i will relap the valves ect.

Test sequence

‒ → Insert new valve into guide until end of valve stem is flush with end of guide. Due to the slight difference in stem dimensions, ensure that only an inlet valve is used in the inlet guide and an exhaust valve in the exhaust guide.

‒ Determine rock.

Wear limit: 0.8 mm

Thats what the big manual says!

That company would have their own source for the guides, if you do want them to do the job, if you can get the head to me that company is only about 6 miles from me

tbh maxmaxmax could probably do it with all his books and machining stuff haha! christ knows where to find the guides though.

Without a doubt and with the stem seals being goosed it's the only way oil in any quantity is going to be getting into the combustion, your earlier compression tests eliminated the rings as the source

No the valve seats being goosed would affect the compression, the guides being worn only comes into play when the valves are moving and being worn with goosed stem seals allows the oil into the combustion

You'd be down on compression if youd burnt out a valve or something

after a FUCKLOAD of steam cleaning and parafin, here is the cylinder head...

the only thing strong enough to get the shit out of the exhaust ports was parafin. i also had to use some scotch pad to get the hard bits out.

all nice and smooth now. need to check valve guides tomorrow, and cross my fingers.

Looks good mate if I was going to rebuild my head again I would definately get it properly steam cleaned too

And would probably convert it to solid tappets too

Looks like a brand new head now you have to make it perform like one

this did most of the work. pretty good bit of kit tbh! still had to use some elbow grease though.

pete i cba to go with solid lifters as I'm not camming it for a while, plus there annoyingly noisy lol.

HOPEFULLY my valve guides are in tolerance and i can lap the valves in tomorrow. visually they look ok but obvs my eyesight isnt THAT good haha

The worst of the valve guides (#2 exhaust valve) looks to be about 0.6mm. Happy days! I have cleaned and lapped in the valves in excitement

So with a bit of luck, its the stem seals giving me trouble!

Head is built up. New stem seals are in too. Looks so clean haha

also, the oil i put down the bores on sunday evening is still there lol. Cant be rings surely!
