Forgot I had a classic policy :(

Featured Replies

Ok, so I got my renewal for my insurance. I open it, thinking yay 1 years no claims, should be cheap!

No, I completely forgot I had taken out classic insurance, which builds no NCB. It's gone up £50 to £1500. I'm 21, driving a 1043cc Mk2 Bready, which is lowered 50mm.

It's annoying as I was going to fit a Weber DCD carb, and GT cam, in the hope that with 1 years NCB, it would still be no more expensive than last year. Obviously this will no longer be the case, and I can't afford to pay any more.

Can anyone recommend an insurer that will give a good quote on a lightly performance modified, old car, for a 21yo with no NCB, that would build some no claims?

Thanks

I would think £1500 is about the going rate for your age, NCB ect.

Try Admiral they have always given me very good quotes

£1500 is fine, and to be expectected with no NCB, I just forgot I wasnt getting any NCB lol.

£1500 for classic car insurance sounds a bit steep i thought it was capped when its a classic policy

Admiral/elephant. As long as you don't have bags of mods.

Aye, elephant are ok. They have no idea about modifications though.

Lmao max you know that too well.

I really don't get, how you can drive for a year on your own policy without any claims, but that isn't a years no claims?

Well I have driven, for a year, = 1x year

I havnt claimed, = no claims

1x year + no claims = 1 year NCB.

It's like insuring another car.

Have you got no claims, yes 3 years. Are they on another policy? Yes.

So you have no no claims? No, I have 3 years no claims.

AHHH

£1500 is a rip off. Is that fully comp? I have never paid more than 450 for a car. TBH, its not worth trying to build a no claims at that cost. Get on someone else's insurance if you can. Some companies will let you build up a no claims that way but only for that company. I was on my mums for years with the co-op. Dirt cheap insurance that got down to something like £200 on a 1043 polo. I then got my own insurance with admiral at 24 for £350 on a 1300 polo with no NCB (couldn't transfer as I wasn't the primary driver on the co-op policy). Both were tpft, which can be hard to get now. Mad thing is for my 2003 9n 1.4 tdi it costs about £350. Having my mum on the policy dropped it by £100 too.

Do you have to insure it as a classic? If not, don't. It doesn't seem any cheaper. Failing that, get onto adrian flux, footman james or any of the niche brokers. They can normally get a good deal that you won't find on compare the market or such. You could even visit a local brokers and see what you can get.

£1500 is amazing believe me and yes it is fully comp (it was cheaper!). I used to drive my moms k11 micra (i loved that car!). When she changed jobs and stopped using it, I looked at insuring it myself. Best price was around £2500.

Thats one of the reasons I got into old/classic cars, they are a lot cheaper to insure!

I will have to look into named drivers though, although I know they are clamping down on young people who "drive their mums car to the shops once a week"

I know insurance has gone up, but that's fucking stupid, especially at your age. When I first started driving 11 years ago it was £450 for me and my sister on my mums policy. A while ago I know, but the car would have been that much newer too.

Adrian flux have always done me well, although I'm a bit older than you. Insurance is silly with no NCB, good luck!

Yes Simon insurance is expensive!

I pay near £3000 a year to insure my mk3 and a boggo 90hp TDI golf, with 3 years no claims

Try Sky!

I'm with them, 1200 a year, I've got 2 years no claims, but on a 1.4 (engine swap/brakes/suspension) ALL declared and it's in a 6n2..

£3000 nick? I pay £800 for two cars, including the 'loon in similar trim to yours. I 'm older I know, but that is fucking silly. I'm obviously out of the (expensive) loop. There are some advantages to approaching 30 after all!

And being a teacher

paid £1200 fully comp with admiral mods declared with my 1.3 cl with 0yr ncb, first year driving but on a 10 month booster policy thingy from 19yr old to 20yr old

now I'm paying £800 fully comp with admiral mods declared with 1yr ncb, second year driving also in a 10 month policy, I'm 20 now and it expires just before I'm 21

when i was first getting quotes my best was £1500 with elephant so i was gonna go with that as admiral are the same company so i wasnt gonna bother trying them aswell, fortunately i did and saved myself £300 :)

I'm paying £700 third party f&t, I've just tuened 18 and I've been on a classic policy for 8 months, this is with elephant with my nan and mum as named drivers

And being a teacher

It's always been the same, even when I worked in the children's home, factories, student, tart, marine engineer (was the closest they had to marine access installation technician. Which was my self appointed title. I used to build pontoons and jetties don't you know).

neither sky or adrian flux would give me a quote! It's like i'm super high risk, but I've been driving 3 1/2 years now. And my car has 45hp! If i crash into someone at high speed, they probably wont even notice as old polos are made of folded cardboard (fact)

I will look into admiral and elephant though, thanks guys

Think it's probably more like 2500, I dunno.

That's 12k a year on each, golf insured on the road, everything declared on polo, no other drivers etc.

It'll be less now iv turned 21 though, I could Have insured 6n with admiral in my second year of driving for £800 but they couldn't cover all my planned mods

thats pretty expensive man, especially with 3 years driving or whatevs! mines about 1500 on the polo with 1 years driving and 0 no claims as i was a named driver before

I could insure it through a "normal" insurer cheaper but wouldn't be able to declare things properly.

Also working in the motor trade doesn't help - Brentacre were by far the cheapest broker for me - £1000 less than Flux and that wasn't even for performance mods!

Due to no claims being on Polo insuring the golf with any other insurer was looking to be around £1800! But Brentacre did a deal on that for around 1200 I think, sucks but at least I'm actually legit, on my own policies etc.

dont go with admiral

what company are you with currently?

Why? I'm with Peter James. It's not the price that bugs me, just that I want NCB lol

classic policies ain't really designed to be used on your main car, more of a second car sort of thing. Most if not all have limited mileage on them so although you are insured for a year you probably ain't gonna actually be driving the car half as much as most people. I think mine was limited to like 3k or something

It's swings and round abouts, you get cheaper insurance, but in return you don't build up no claims and have to limit how much you actually use the car
