After some light wheels...

Must be:

14x6, 4x100, et around 30-35.

Found some like 3.9kg then realised they were about £350 a rim, any recommendations?

Please don't say get 13's as there is more avail, because that's not a 14 :)

Think they maybe around 7.1kg! Not that light really.

But thanks for input - I will be buying brand new anyway

mx5 daisys are 14", dirt cheap and very light. only downside to them other than the looks are the fact they are only 5.5j wide, oh and the centrebore will need opening up a little.

or the mx5 bbs wheels would be a nice option. wont look out of place and very light at 4.5kg only neg is the slightly high offset

The high offset isn't an issue - can always space it, better than too low an offset.

Decisions - I do like Mo5's but they're not very light!

If I remember I'll weigh 14" Golf steelies, Compo MOs and BBS RAs tomorrow.

Have you got the 14x6 MOs Andy?

They got tyres on or not? IIRC my MSW's with a new 185/50 was 14.5kg I think.

If you've got 14x6 MOs and I decide on them, would I be able to pop over one day and try them for size before I spend the £600 odd on a set?

They're 14x6" MOs and have 185/50 R14 Yoko A539s on them. I've also got loose tyres to weigh so I'll get a reasonable idea of wheel weights exluding tyres too.

Yeah, can pop round to try them no probs. They're ET38 too, so standard VW 14" fitment.

Spot on mate - be good to know the tyre weight, also good as I run them exact tyres!

Tempted to run 13's but not convinced due to increased arch gap making me want to go lower but it being rubbish to drive then!

yeah they were specially produced for the mx5. lots of sellers try and pass of regular rzs as being mx5 ones as they command good money due to their low weight

Weighed some wheels this morning... The bathroom scales aren't the last line in weighing accuracy, but they'll do for indication purposes!

Results are:

14x6" Golf Steel = 8.5kg

14x6" Compomotive MO = 7.5kg (just under)

14x6" BBS RA = 7.5kg (just over)

185/50 R14 Yokohama A539 (new) = 7.5kg

Cheers Andy - well going by that my MSW's will be around 6.5-7kg.

Hmm decisions !

Those results are probably +/-10%, so only really useful as a comparison between each other.

The BBS and Compos were weighed with tyres on, so just took the weight of a loose tyre off the total. Didn't make any allowances for the additional mass of the compressed air in the tyres though!

Well I'd imagine the MSW's are similar to RAs to be honest - IIRC they're made by OZ racing so not lumpy copies like some wheels.

Your figures seem about right, IIRC a mo5 Is something like 6.8kg.

Interesting - and not really the answer I wanted ! Tyres are heavy haha.

Need to read up on whether there's much performance gain from loss of rotational mass, obviously I'm aware of reducing unsprung mass

14" is an odd size but the MX5 BBS shout isn't a bad one. They are mega light but then would need spacing.

JDM wheels in 4x100 can be quite light, Work/Rays/Enkei etc

Surely the same affect as having a lighter flywheel? Braking could be improved too because there's less rotational force to stop, but the affect would probably be negligable compared to the energy of the car...
