I'm sure mine were 30mm multihex.

I always thought they were 30mm. Are you using a deep enough socket to clear the driveshaft?

Confused !! I've got a brand new one in front of me and it's 30mm A/F

From what I remember, I always used to forget with my 6n, sure i used to take a 30 & 32mm multihex home and was the smaller one, as it's same as mk3 but they are single hex.

Same as my mk4 golf come to think of it - 30mm multi.

It sounds like you're trying to find a socket large enough to fit which is single hex? Not sure? Got a photo of the nut?

Just double checked and the 32 definatley doesn't fit and the 34 is far too big! It's the 12 pointed one, does that mean standard socket won't fit it? All my tools are 400 miles away....

Certainly sounds an odd one - didn't mean to put down your mechanical logic or anything by the way about using a single hex - have seen some foolish mistakes in my life lol :)

Have you got a picture of the nut?

Shit the bed i guess your right. Does anyone know how else you can remove a driveshaft to access the sump without taking out this mysterious hub nut? Can i unbolt the ball joint and swing it out?

Cheers for input :D

You could do that yes - mark the bolt heads position on the arm before removing so when you refit it doesn't upset the camber.

You could unbolt the 6 driveshaft bolts from the gearbox - m8 spline tool needed.

If you dropped the engine steady off (lower mount) will the engine not tip moving the shafts position a bit to gain access?

Thanks man. Is there enough space to drop the shaft without undoing anything on the hub end and just unbolting the M8 heads?? The ball joint bolts are looking rusted to hell so don't really wanna go near them!

My '99 was a 30mm, standard 12 sided socket. Might have some random aftermarket job on there but i've never come across a 33mm head like ever, automotive or industry (and i use some random sizes in industry, like 20mm, 27mm, and 41mm).

33mm is as near as makes no differerance to 1 5/16"

^^ I'm not American ;)

^^^ I'm British and imperial is still the official unit of measurement 8-)

..If you're in your 50's or above.

The problem with imperial measurements is that they're shit. I'm a fairly patriotic and slightly anti-eurostate 'brit' who has questioned himself for driving a German car at times, but i can't argue with metric measuring.

Given i have to use it both professionally and DIY/hobby i'm pleased it's the standard.
