Hi, I am looking for some affordable, second hand winter tyres for my car. I travel a country route to school (which has a bad reputation in good weather) and the weather is taking a turn for the worse now.

I have been quoted £220 for a set of 4 Yokahoma winter tyres but it's out of my budget. I found some hardly worn on ebay but the are miles away and want collection.

I just wondered if anyone on here had some please. I am in Glossop.

gosh i wouldn't have thought of those. can you just drive them as normal?

my mum and dad put their winter tyres on around the end of November and keep them on for about 4 months, is that just the same with these type. do they handle ok when its not snowy/icy?

these are a different size, can you use different sizes on cars (new driver here!)

Have a look on gumtree. There is a set of 4 175/70/14 winter tyres. £150 they in London. Hope that helps.

There's a place in Macclesfield that'll do you some uniroyal winters for around £180 in that size. When I went there a few years ago they charged £6 a wheel to fit/balance/valve. It's a bit of a backstreet place but I couldn't argue for the price they charged.

Not much cheaper I know but if you can be a bit flexible on the tyre size you might be able to get cheaper ones. I'd give them a call to see what else they have in I'm not sure how comprehensive the website is.

for tyre size, you can usually go up a width and down a profile, (or vice versa) one or two either size of standard. In your case:

155/75/14 - don't bother it's too narrow

165/70/14

175/65/14

185/60/14 - this is a very common size and usually quite cheap

This is assuming your wheels are at least 5.5" wide. I would guess they are based on the profile, you must have a 9n or newer to have such large diameter tyres?

The key part of tyre choice is to try and maintain the right rolling radius (the radius of the wheel plus the height of the tyre sidewall) and following the above does that reasonably well unless you start going for a big change in numbers.
